Can someone please share their knowledge
I have a vintage Presidential Rolex. I did not receive any paperwork with it and I'm not sure how to tell what year was made. I know its marked 1803 under the serial number but unfortunately the middle of the serial number is worn down due to the center link of the band leaving an impression in the gold. I looked at it with a loop and you can get the first three letters and the last couple. The middle numbers or hard to see and you could barely make out the top and bottom of each so I wouldn't be 100% positive I had it right. Anyway I was just curious if someone could help me out. Thank you very much.

The first three numbers will give you an approximate timeframe of when the watch was made, using an online site with the date database....https://www.minus4plus6.com/numbers.php
But I think the first three numbers would only help you if the watch was produced before 1987. After that, you'd need the letter that corresponds as well. |

A little help dating my 1803 Presidential.
Okay so I'm a little confused on dating my watch. I keep seeing that in 1987 the serial number is changed to begin with a letter. From my understanding serial numbers prior to that date were all numbers. My serial number starts with RE but it's not a quickset. This is what's confusing me. If it was a 1987+ it should have a quickset right? Is there any chance the case maybe newer than the movement? Does anyone have an explanation that can help me out. Sorry for being a pain and trust me I've searched for hours before asking. Thanks
Here are some pics of the watch. |

It was given to me and i'm just trying to figure out exactly what i have. I'm having a hard time dating it . The serial number starts with an R and from what I read Rolex didn't switch from numbers to letters until 1987. So I originally thought it could be a late 80s model but I then realized it does not have a quickset feature. If it were late 80s i believe it should have one. So i don't know what to think lol. I'm hoping someone on here can shed some light on the issue.

Yes, an R series would be 1987 and it should have the 3055 movement with quickset and would also be a 18038.

Why not show this odd serial number? Looks like an ordinary 1803 with normal markings, lets see that serial number :)

See that's what's not making sense. This serial number starts with an r and underneath the serial number it says 1803. It doesn't have a quickset so how can it be a late 80s model? I'm going to contact Rolex and hopefully they can help me out.

The reason the serial number looks blocked is due to the band making contact with the case. I guess overtime it's worn a perfect rectangle in the center of the serial number. It looks like the first three letters are REG

Based on the bracelet I think that you are a decade off on your date estimate.

Above the 1803 will read "REGISTERED DESIGN"
The serial number will be on the other side between the lugs.

Now that you say it starts with REG you are clearly looking at the wrong end. Get a loup and see if you can make out the serial # on the correct side of the watch. |

Wow I'm a moron.. I was looking at the wrong end of the watch the whole time. I realized this when one of you guys mentioned the word REGISTER DESIGN. That's exactly what it says. You can clearly see the REG in the beginning but the rest was worn down. I just looked up the real serial number and it is a 1972 model. This amazes me because I would have never guessed it was that old. For being almost 50 years old it's in amazing condition. I guess my next question is what can I value this piece at? Since it's a vintage watch does that help or hurt the value? keep in mind I have no box or paperwork. Thanks again for all your help

I just noticed your bracelet clasp is marked as 1972 as well.
