Panerai owners, how’s your experience? With or without crown guards?

Hi all! I’ve been wanting a Panerai for quite sometime now and I’d like to get some honest feedback from Panerai owners about your experiences with your watch. Any drawbacks or advantages? Do you prefer the crown guards or not?

I have very small wrists and when I went to the store to try a couple of watches, 42mm is the perfect size for me. Here are some photos and I definitely fell in love with the PAM574. The PAM512 is what I’m really aiming for but it’s discontinued (will search from trusted sellers here).

I wear my pams on right wrist,actually I prefer a destro luminor or standard luminor than any of the diamond crown radiomir as the crown oftem digs to my arm (or is it forearm?)

However I’ve never worn rad 1940 long term so I can’t comment on its comfort

I much prefer crown guards on a Panerai. It's the signature look for me. I've only ever had Luminors and no Radiomirs to date because of it.

I've been a Rolex "guy" for years now and recently became interested in Panerai. Not being interested in 44+mm watches I searched and discovered the 682 (42mm) and bought one - and I love it! As others have mentioned the crown guards on Panerai references is a signature look and one that I much prefer. My 682 has been very comfortable for me, the crown guard is unobtrusive and is a great change of pace from my 16610 and 94210 Big Block.

I own both also. The Luminor model really is the signature model so if you only plan on having one Panerai and want something emblematic of the brand, a Luminor or Luminor 1950 is probably the way to go. The Radiomirs can still be large watches, but they are flatter (in general) and without the crown guard; wear smaller. I prefer the Radiomir 1940 models.

I have to say that I consider myself mostly a Rolex guy - they will always be sort of my first love in terms of watches. However I now own 4 Panerai and have become really fond of them. All of mine right now are either 44mm or 42mm Luminor variants with crown guards and if I were starting over with Panerai I'd still start there. But I do want a Luminor as well..... ;-)

If only one and you’re not sure, the 1940 Rad is a reasonable compromise with the Luminor lugs and without the device protecting the crown.

Personally, I would shoot for two: a Luminor and a Radiomor (with wire lugs).... best of both worlds. :-)

I like crown guard. Its actually the reason why I got into Panerai, and I am sticking to 44mm Luminor for that reason.

I agree. The crown guards are growing on me now, so I'm aiming for a PAM392 42mm.

Good point! I'm thinking of getting the PAM392 42mm. My wrists are 6 inches and 44mm and up are too big for me.

I absolutely love it!! Thanks for sharing. I decided to go for the crown guards so I'm aiming for a PAM392 or PAM676 (Due), they are both 42mm.

42mm luminor case will fit you great. I have had 44mm luminors (and wouldn't mind getting another one), and currently have a PAM904 (42mm) and love it. My wrist is 7".

Thanks, Darren! My wrist is 6" and 44mm is super huge on me. So opting for 42mm. Any other 42mm PAM recommendations that you might now that has a simpler look like the PAM112?

at the end of the day there is no right answer so it's really all about personal preference. I have owned as many as 10 PAMs and in the end I sold my Rads and only kept the Luminors. A Panerai just pops with the Crown Guard so it's a must for me personally :)

On the other hand,check out 42mm radiomirs as they have models with more interesting complications/movements such as Zenith,JLC,GP

I own both, however, my rule of thumb is that if the dial looks like it should have been equipped with a crown guard (Panerai colors and layout) then I don’t subscribe to sans crown guard. My only non crown guard radiomir is the 687, specifically because its dial is like no other.

Love Rads, but my recently acquired first Pam is with the CG. I think there is an oomph factor with the crown guard popping out.

My wrists are thin too at 6.5" and went the 1950 44mm. Pam's are chunkier than it's peers but definitely grows on you with time. Just need to buy some after market straps to set it right.

You can try the 42mm Pam's. There is even a new 40mm Pam #1048 which you may try.

Pam's are stunning regardless what reference you buy!

I like the crown guard because it’s so iconic but I tried the 512 recently and I love it, it feels much dressier

I’ve got my pan 320 for 8 years now and never even considered something else, but then I had the opportunity on vacation to tray this beauty 577 on, at an AD’s
Just pure Panerai in my eyes.
And I’m loving it.
