I must say as much as I love the idea of being able to afford a ceramic Pepsi dial as the WG was out of my reach, I can't help but feel Rolex's decision to release a SS version is like backstabbing their WG owners.

It also affects the old 16710 owners.... it was cool to own a historic SS version and an added bonus that the closest new watch is a high end PM watch. Now that bonus is gone, with the closest new watch being a newer SS version.

In real-life photos it looks like the SS BLRO case is more rectangular. If the new Jubilee is 21mm at the endlinks, it wouldn't take much to push the lugs out 0.5mm on each side while retaining the same lug widths.

I'll put money on it being 21mm up top and not fitting the older cases. That puts it in line with the 21mm DJ 41 Super Jubilee bracelets, albeit with different features.

Great example and a cautionary tale for Rolex!

In the early nineties Harley’s were hard to find.
You put down your money down at the dealership and waited up to a year to pick up your bike.

Used bikes often sold at or above MSRP. (Sound familiar?)

Harley’s were in demand and so they built a new factory and made more and more of them. And the customers were happy because there were no more waiting lists and dealers couldn’t ask for MSRP + anymore.

They forced the dealers to build fancy boutiques and enforced prices to try to offset the drop in value.

Now the dealers have unsold stock sitting on the showroom floor, and resale value on a ten year old Harley is comparable to a ten year old car. They are no longer rare and special and sought after, and the value reflects that.

Harley just closed one of their factories and cut production.
They say their customers are aging out of the bike market, and younger people just aren’t buying bikes like they used to.
Many parallels to mechanical watches!

My guess is that the first SS version that DavidSW lists for sale will be $17K
Think that is low, bragging rights for rich kids will make it over $20K, in UK it will be for sure.

I think the steel pepsi will also be available with oyster one day when the LN and BLNR are replace by new models.
Don't think all steel GMT's from now on will only be available with jubilee bracelets. They are just waiting for the old stock of WG BLRO's with oyster bracelets to be sold...

Cheers

I am sure I read somewhere that the BLRO bezel was quite costly to make, therefore was only used on a PM model. I also read that the BLRO was not a big seller. If these statements are true, are Rolex using the bezel on the cheaper SS just to shift? and willing to take a 'loss' at the same time?

First off, I get the frustration of current BLRO owners, but is it really any different than what Rolex did with the Daytona C? The ceramic bezel used to be on PM daytonas only, and now it's available (if you can get one) on SS models.

That said, Rolex is well known for keeping bezels and dials exclusive to certain models to incentivize their purchase. I felt that even a Coke bezel in stainless steel was a disservice to WG BLRO owners. The blue dial added to the WG seems like a "cop out" to keep the model "exclusive." I still think that the Pepsi bezel with a black dial on an Oyster bracelet is the best looking modern GMT-Master II and now it seems like that is an even more exclusive piece as it is no longer available.
People who care bought above their means, and are upset they purchased an "investment" that may not hold its value. The people who bought one becasue they are wealthy collectors, keep it in the watch winder next to their platinum Daytona, and could not care less.

I think you'll see a lot of WG BLRO owners change their dials to blue to stay in the "exclusive" club.

you only really notice the bezels, really would you shell out more cash for a dial change after being taken for a ride ?

Rolex have stuffed all the BLRO owners and took them for fools by selling them a premium priced watch and selling almost the same looking watch for a quarter of the price swop the bracelet from a normal ceramic gmt and hey bingo you have a BLRO in all steel !

total joke they did that with the white gold sky dweller owners also not long ago !

I've seen this before with the non ceramic white gold Daytona with the red racing dial, after the new steel ceramic model came out demand went crazy for it and still is to a point of where theres little difference in buying a used white gold Daytona or a new steel ceramic Daytona .

used white gold at 50% off or pay 50 to 80% over on a steel model its a no brainer to me gold all the way , just the white gold models are dire sellers everyone I speak too says the same .

Good points; we can only wonder if the exclusivity of the DayDate as a PM only watch will eventually go away too!

I can understand the frustration but it seems more non WG owners are frustrated. I’m happy with my WG BLRO. Like others have done, I bought mine pre owned so the big hit from new is a non factor

After thinking about it a bit more, I think you are absolutely right, Neil...
$20K or bust for the SS version with it perhaps leveling out at $16-17K after a year or so.

The bracelet style is more obvious than the dial color so the WG very is still very identifiable.

I suspect many (most?) WG BLRO owners are non-WIS types and will never know or care that a similar version exists in SS.

There is a WG jubilee bracelet (don’t recall reference) so the WG Pepsi GMT owner could achieve the look of the Pepsi GMT steel version; other way around supposely not possible

I think in 6 months time the wg Pepsi will be the best value of the lot. Maybe In much the same way that the pm Daytona is better value than the SS these days.

Not great news for current owners, but an opportunity for others I guess. I do think that the prices of 16710’s will be stable however, given the likely difficulty of getting one of the new ones.
