Learning Moment???

With the recent Kim K. hotel room invasion, I paused to ponder the wisdom of posting items of wealth via social media. Of course, we don't flaunt wealth here, but to potential malefactors we could become a person of interest.

TRF isn't Social Media per se, but our profiles, pics with EXIF embedded, vacation photos, etc. could be targeted. Some collections we have at home may be tucked away in a safe, but nobody wants an armed robber coming to their home.

So my question is whether anyone here has opinions on how the Kim K. incident may influence their online activity on TRF?

Oh, please I get it - most won't like the K's - so spare us the rants - it's about the incident - I'd like to hear opinions rather than this thread being shut down for bad behavior

Kim K puts every waking moment into the ether. She flaunts everything she has, and makes certain everyone knows exactly where she is. She is the quintessential target.

Other than a fighter pilot we know, I don't see too much location data here. Not that it can't be extracted from images, but not much that is easily targetable.

The story isn't over on Kim K (where was her security detail)...

I take precautions and I avoid the mainstream social media like the plague.

Anything I don't need on a regular basis is stored elsewhere.

It's a sad state of affairs, but that's the reality of the "Great Society."

She can post all the blingy expensive things she wants, that to me isn't the problem. The problem comes when you couple that with her postings of where she is and where she is going.

But then again, it wouldn't surprise me to learn this was all set up for media attention. How else would they make entertainment news otherwise?

This wisdom should be permanently enshrined in TRF.

I can't begin to count the times that I've interviewed burglary victims that when asked if they told anyone that they were going to be away or on vacation they answered absolutely no one... I did post it on Facebook, Instagram or whatever, but no, I never told anyone that I'd be away.
Volunteer victims was our term.

I had a very high profile home invasion that started with a young kid flaunting his belongings on social media.

The way that all worked out had me thinking that's a possibility as well. It'll be interesting to see how she handles those social media accounts after her one month off.

I personally don't share any watch photos on any form of social media. My presence on there is extremely limited anyway. I have no worries posting on the forum.

I take the proper "precautions" that we don't talk about on here but I really don't keep anything of value in my home. Watches are all stored at the bank except for the one on my wrist.

The K robbery was probably an inside job and/or insurance fraud with media hype.

I don't know. I've got a cop car in my driveway and it didn't stop my neighbors from smoking dope in their garage. I go to put my partner in the car and he practically yanked me straight to the garage lol. They moved shortly after lol.

We call my neighborhood cop vile lol. We live in flocks.
9 cops live back here.

I don't usually let my wife post vacation pictures UNTIL we get back from the vacation.

Learning Moment???

I do think about the EXIF data being a potential problem. Anyone know if Tapatalk screens that out?

Here's a test pic to pick at.

Blurry shot of Moon while I visit some friends. Can you get any location or other targeting info from its EXIF ?

I'm not seeing location or camera data, but I use a simple reader. (LightRoom).

Here's an online app http://www.verexif.com/en/

No exif data at all that would show anything of value . Not even camera info

Well, we know for a fact that scammers stalk the classifieds, so who knows who else is out there making plans? TRF is not social media, but some members seem to use it in a similar fashion. Discretion is the safe option here, IMO.

Adam, does TRF remove any metadata when the image uploads?

I ask because I tested an image I uploaded and most of the EXIF data had been stripped out.

Certainly agree Adam.
And thanks to those who checked the Tapatalk uploaded pic for EXIF data. That tells me it is a safe way to upload a pic without sharing more than one wants.

As for perception vs. reality -
Is it possible for a malefactor to target us? Yes...
Is it likely to be done solely on TRF posts? Not really...

I do agree that some profiles here may give away more than discretion allows. And then the pics of huge collections, discussions of which safe one uses at home, plus pics while on vacation could add up to targetable info.
So I'll say this: Learning from a Kardashian is something I'd never have guessed in a hundred years

I don't think we learned anything from Kimmy. Any booger eating moron knows better than to publicly display wealth, tell everyone where it is, and announce when it's best to come steal it. This episode just confirms that the K's don't rise to the level of a common moron.

Personally, I don't understand why she had so many valuables with her on a vacation.

Re. TRF posts and scams, I am not very worried. I have never posted my face or surname. I don't even own many valuables -- all my stuff could easily be replaced

Not us really - I meant people who pour out every detail of their lives on FB, Snapchat, etc.

I'm pretty sure those people haven't learned anything. They will continue as before. What else would they do on those sites if they didn't document every waking moment?

I'd bet it was a real robbery. The social media blackout is costing her huge $$$ anyway, so if this is a money-making scam then it's a very bad one
