Anyone have Veneers?

Hi

So im thinking about getting my top row of teeth veneered to get that hollywood smile.

Some info about me. Im 28 years old. My teeth are straight. Had braces for 7 year. I just feel that when i see people on tv i noticed how perfect there teeth look and felt like that something that i would like to have. The perfect size and to have a very bright noticeably white teeth.

I wondering if anyone has had major veneer work done for cosmetic reasons. I had a consultation and was quoted $18,000 for 10 top row teeth. Thats without the fee to be put to sleep during the procedure.

Did anyone stay awake during the procedure which they said would take around 4 hours.

Just want to see if anyone have had this done and what they thought.

If you were in the UK my wife would gladly take your money - but first she'd make sure you're really sure about it because it's not a procedure without damage to the original dentine.

Ask around for details of the system they're going to use. There are ready made veneers that the dentists custom fits to your teeth, lab made ones that are designed from either 3D scans and/or impressions and direct composite veneers where the dentist puts a layer of white filling material onto your teeth, then shapes and polishes them to give the desired effect. As far as I'm aware, only direct composite can be done without removing dentine first, but they are often less secure and can get lost.

You also need to be aware that veneers will change your bite pattern and can take some getting used to. From what she's told me it's quite common for people to go back and have them removed or remodeled.

Ive done teeth whiting before. Im not so worried about the color as much as the perfect teeth shape and size.

Is there a particular reason? Im pretty sure most celebrities get it done even though there teeth were probably in good condition.

I know the importance of being sure because they shave down your real teeth to get the veneers on.

Do not mess with your teeth if they are straight and healthy just for that hollywood look.

I don't know much about veneers, but pretty sure they have to file your teeth to fit them, this is totally irreversible, and I've just read that you may need a mouthguard overnight, like someone said, your bite will change and they will need professional maintenance. Sounds like there could be lots of potential problems.

Look after the ones you got save yourself a ton of grief and expense and your vanity will subside with age.

lol, this could or could not be true. I know its irreverable but i like the fact that i could have perfect manufactured looking teeth. I don't think the style will go to unkept and non straight teeth. So I'm safe with that aspect of it.

Wondering what the people with veneers for cosmetic reasons think about their teeth.

Maybe if you're teeth were horribly misshapen, but you said they are fine.

If you're in Hollywood and need that celebrity smile, then sure, why not?

If you are just a regular person with average to good teeth, I think it's pointless. Unless of course you have some crippling insecurity about your teeth and this is the only way to get beyond it.

I have custom made veneers on the top and bottom of most of my mouth. I grind my teeth at night and my teeth were so thin that veneers were the only solution to my problem.

It's not hard to get used to them but I would never do it for cosmetic reasons alone.

Best answer :.)

Seriously though - I had 3 veneers & 1 crown in 2005 (front 4 teeth). Only reason had done was my 4 front weren't good & v conscious of them. As others have said they need to file the teeth a bit for the composite to stick. My dentist also told me at time that the veneers would probably last 9/ 10 years max & then have to be crowned but so far so good

I'd seriously question why you'd spend that money on good teeth for what in effect are fake ones .........

I wouldn't go through all the work and effort if you already have straight healthy teeth. Or if your smile shows your gumline, that's where it starts to appear obviously fake. The photo above is a good example of what you DONT want... They don't even match.

That being said, I have 11 dental implants and every tooth you can see in my mouth is false. It was done because I was missing teeth, and did't have as many adult teeth come in as most people. I went with a very natural look and have only once after the fact been asked about it.

Now if your "Hollywood smile" looks like Steve Buscemi, go for it!

I would ONLY do this if you have too. If the teeth you'd be replacing are healthy, do not damage them!

Just my opinion!

I think I have a great career,but I think dentist would be best(assuming I couldn't be a professional athlete,musician or movie star).

I try to steer many young smart people that way! At least one has gone that way!

To the OP, there are a few dentist and dental specialists who can give a good opinion.

Don't bother!

Invisalign forces the teeth you've got into gaps that aren't big enough for them, or gaps that have been created by removing perfectly healthy teeth. The problem isn't that your teeth are in the wrong place, that you've got too many teeth or that the spacing is wrong, the problem is that the alignment of your jaw is wrong.

The owner of the practice where my wife works swears by Invisalign and has used it on his wife's teeth. She's now seeing my wife for more traditional ortho treatment as her teeth have shifted back to where they started. Invisalign will always fail, no matter what the initial problem, without the use of a retainer at night.

I'm a general dentist.... First off, I think it's funny that this is on a watch forum, but here it goes. If it really bothers you, then it's worth it. Only you can make that decision.
But if you have straight teeth and just want the Hollywood smile, keep in mind the potential maintenance and risks that might come with it. Veneers, in some cases, can be done without removing enamel or dentin, but that's not the norm. If they have to remove tooth structure you are 100% committed to these veneers for the rest of your time. If one does chip, you'll have to replace it, if your gums recede, you might see the margin of the veneer and need to redo them. To redo them they almost always need to remove more tooth structure by refining the prep. If you grind your teeth the chance of chipping increases. To help minimize that risk you'll probably need a bite splint to wear at night to protect them from chipping ( another fee that will have to be redone on avg of every 10 yrs or less).
Basically my opinion is that if your teeth are in good shape and not severely malformed or malposed, I would not encourage you to do it. You're potentially opening an expensive can of worms for a 5% improvement. I'm sure a cosmetic dentist would push it, and if you want that 5-10% cosmetic improvement then by all means. But realize it might come with some strings attached: maintenance costs, chipping, debonding, recession, decay, etc.

Orthodontist here: agree with this above. Dentists/orthodontists can also do some reshaping of your edges that would be less invasive than jumping into veneers. That and whitening can make a pretty big difference. Explore all options before you jump into having your front teeth prepped for veneers. Most of them end up looking pretty fake because everyone chooses WHITE for the color which doesn't look natural. There are still a lot of good practitioners out there who care about you as a person first (like our friend I quoted) and don't see you as a dollar sign. Make sure you are at one of those offices. Veneers are appropriate in certain circumstances and as an orthodontist I've recommended a few people don't go through braces and instead explore veneers. HOWEVER, there are a lot of veneers done when they shouldn't be.
