Your thoughts on the Seiko Snowflake in titanium

Hi everyone,

I have a chance for a good buy on a new Seiko Snowflake in titanium. I just bought an SBGA029 and love it. In fact so much, that light weight Snowflake is pulling at me now! Model SBGA211...

I was just wondering what your opinion is of this particular model. The face on it seems impeccable. And the light weight is appealing to me when I don't want to wear the heavier stuff.

I have the SBGA211
Dial and case work are impeccable.
The bracelet is ok, the fit/feel/finish just doesn’t seem to match the rest of the watch.
SD is really pushing the boundaries of movement design.
Lightness takes a bit of getting used to.
If it’s on a good deal I’d get it.

I'm not a fan of the bracelet so I have mine on a strap. Love it

As an alternative, have a look at the sbgj201. It has some texture on the dial known as the iwate dial, automatic gmt movement with beautiful 44gs case.

Love the snowflake . My first GS. Though would be interesting to see it side by side w the new “winter” iteration which has smaller and diff case design in addition to the diff pattern on the dial

Absolutely love everything about it from the dial, the finishing of the case, the markers and the hands to the uniqueness and accuracy of the movement. I finally pull the trigger after 2 years. The only thing that was holding me back was the lightness of the titanium so if the light weight actually appeals to you then there’s nothing to think about.

NIce watch, thanks! Do they run near as tight as a spring drive. Not familiar with the high beat.

I love that light weight feel from prior titaniums I have had. It's a nice change. My theory on the bracelets being kinda loose feeling on the GS watches is it's by design. It would be easy for them to do a tighter bracelet if they can make the dial etc so impeccable.

I noticed on my new dive watch its like that, but I think it is done for comfort possibly. It has more give between another axis and conforms to the wrist and movement better. I actually don't even notice its on sometimes and its much more comfortable than my Rolees, while being a heavier watch. And its is way more accurate on time! And a 200 meter water rating is nice on the SBGA029!

I think the snowflake spring drive is more accurate due to the movement

Snowflake is great and you won’t regret it.
Personally, I prefer the dual logo Seiko/Grand Seiko SBGA011 model I feel you can find one.

If you get a chance, try one on. I was heading towards the snowflake but found in the flesh that I preferred the 44GS case shape and that the light weight put me off a little. I ended up with an SBGA387 instead.

The dial of the snowflake is spectacular and the movement is an amazing piece of engineering.

However I do feel the watch is a little bit plain for my tastes, plus I don't like how light it is. I know the lightness may be a selling point for some people as you could argue that you'll never know you even have it on.. but that's sort of why I feel it's too light. If I'm spending that kind of money on a watch, I want to KNOW it's on my wrist.

Titanium alloy, is a totally different feel from steel. It won’t feel as cold as steel (depending on ambient temperature, of course), and Seiko’s alloy for the Grand Seikos is proprietary, referred to as High Intensity, which means it has a finish similar to steel when polished.
When you look at polished Titanium elsewhere, you can tell the difference straight away due to the hue.
Don’t get me wrong, typical Grade 5 used looks grand with a mix of polished and brushed surfaces, and provides a nice contrast with Rose Gold (e.g Girard-Perregaux Laureato), but doesn’t match the luminance of 316L.
In that sense, the 011/211 is fairly unique, and has been a great concept since its inception. The dial, the hands, the indices, the lightness (carrying on the theme of a snowflake), the Zaratsu polished case parts, and all with an appearance that could be mistaken for steel.

Go spend some time looking and handling one, before deciding what you’ve become conditioned to is the only option.
Many people have only ever had watches with a certain amount of mass, and written off Titanium abstractly, only to have totally changed their perception once they’ve actually looked at a model that’s appealed to them.

I have the original Snowflake SBGA011, if I recall correctly it was about 20 grams lighter than my 14060m Sub with the non-SEL bracelet. Snowflake and bracelet weigh 97 grams. Sub on rubber strap is lighter than snowflake.

My titanium SBGA281 only weighs 86g with 3 links removed. It is such a comfortable watch to wear due to its lightness and case profile.

I do like the snowflake as it reminds me of winter Hokkaido every time I see that dial. I do not have it yet but hope to add it some day.

I do not wear bracelets on any of my watches. I also purchased a Snowflake a month or two ago. I have it on a leather strap and love it.

The only problem I have is how light it is on a leather strap and it makes every other watch seem heavy. I went to put on another one of my watches and it felt like I was wearing a weight on my arm.

GS also makes great GMT watches as a post said above. One that comes to mind is SBGE209. It is a Spring Drive GMT with a white face. Not snowflake like but a white face. It is a JDM model but you can order it easily from reputable sellers.
