Any thoughts on the Land Rover Velar?
Ive been thinking of a velar for a few weeks to replace my Jeep Grand Cherokee as my DD. I drove one for a few hours yesterday and am thinking hard about buying one. I know my boy, S-DOG’s thoughts but I’d like some more. Any thoughts or experiences with the Velar?

I much prefer the Defender 90, but that's just me. The Defender 90 costs a pretty penny though.

Land Rovers are great to drive. Reliability can be a concern.

yeah, they've been up and down with reliability. I was admiring a shiny red Ferrari in the Starbucks parking lot. A guy drove up in a Range Rover with his son and they got out to admire the Ferrari too. We ooh-ed and aah-ed over it for a bit, and I remarked that his Range Rover was far more reliable and better for toting a son, his friends, and their sports gear. He said no, not really. He's the service manager at a local dealership for Range Rover and too many of the cars they sold are constantly in the shop. Folks are complaining that their new Range Rovers are in the repair bays more than in their own garage bays. Hit or miss. Get a good one and you'll never have problems. Get a bad one and you'll never have a day's peace.

I haven't driven a Velar but they are lovely looking cars. I will second the hit & miss nature of picking up a reliable one though.
I have recently bought a new Volvo XC90 which I would recommend looking at. I'm very happy with it after 3 months. I think it's a gorgeous looking car too. I went with the R-Design model myself. It's sportier looking than the others. It's a twin engine hybrid and the power comes instantly when you put your foot down. I'm loving it I must say. It's also a very safe car if you have a family. Also, I don't work for Volvo but it is my first.

I’ve had 3 Range Rover vogues over the last 10 years. The first two were fantastic, not a single problem. The most recent had a constant stream of electrical issues and was always back at the dealer for ‘resets’ or whatever. In the end, I got fed up, sold it and bought an Audi Q7. But, I’m not a car person, I just buy the most practical. I like the German reliability.

I have had 7 Land Rover products over the last 20 years (Defenders RRSport and RR) and had very few problems.
My main observation is that when there is an issue, the five local authorized JLR dealerships I have used seem incompetent at sorting the problems (big or small) and this seems common throughout the UK. I have friends that have had major persistent problems. I have not owned a Velar and don’t know anybody with one, but in the UK they had major issues with the door handle mechanisms (amongst other electrical issues) when it was first launched but I would hope these problems have been ironed out. A great looking car. |

I don't know about Velar but my wife has a RR Sport for a few years, no problems so far, whatsoever.

Well that is a bit like asking – why not a AP when someone has set his mind on a Rolex and asked for opinions on a Rolex – we could all offer alternatives if that’s what the OP had asked.
But my answer to your question - They are different styles, look etc. The LC may be far more reliable and more capable off road than a Velar, but to my eye is ugly and has little prestige (and yes, to me, badge snobbery does play a part) The LC is a far bigger vehicle and not really comparible to the Velar, which is more ‘car like’ and designed for a completely different purchaser. |

My brother had a RR that was one problem after another. The most luxurious place in the world to await a tow truck. It seems you roll the dice with this brand on reliability.
From Car and Driver "every model uses an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, but one must pair those items with one of three flawed engines." https://www.caranddriver.com/land-ro...ge-rover-velar It is a cool design. Better than most crossover SUVs. |

Reliability is the sole concern with range rovers in general. Definitely lease not buy. I know people with rr’s and little to no problems. I look online and everyone’s having issues. I was seriously considering one but went with Mercedes instead.

When talking reliability, my RRS has been nearly flawless.
40,000 miles in 18 months. I have another half of my lease left and I’m then going to buy an extended warranty and keep it. I love it. But yeah, I’m not a Velar fan. I’d go Macan or F Pace first.

I believe that RR has always been great looking and in the design area it is a winner. My only ownership experience is with the RR V8. A disaster and everything I read in the reviews was true. I was hoping I would be the exception and I was the rule. Issues with service, look up breaks at 30k miles, and it never ends. They have one of the most limited extended warranties in the market and service centers are few and far between. The brand is a mess, in my opinion, and does not seem to be able to manufacture a quality vehicle that is dependable cross the board. I will never own one again.

My wife and I have had success with RR’s we’ve owned over the years, which spans a few models...RR sport, Evoque, LR3, 2 Discoveries (newer version), and yes, had a Velar for a couple years.
Gorgeous vehicle, no problems with it whatsoever. Very comfortable, great for trips, very classy in and out. Wife eventually went with a Q7 last year. Just wanted to try something different. But I wouldn’t hesitate owning another RR |

“My neighbors friends Aunt had a Range Rover and it was always on a tow truck.”
-TRF on Land Rovers with no real experience of modern ones. 2013+ models are completely different animals. Engine/mechanical are fine. Maybe an electronic gremlin here or there but nothing mechanical anymore. To the Velar, is it for you or the wife? It’s a bit on the feminine side and underpowered. If your getting for yourself, get a Sport. |

Best looking SUV in a sea of boxes... unless you’re spending $175k+ I’d say go ahead. Agree on the lease comments.

I’d only be interested in the full fat Range Rover. The Velar is lame.

Op, if your heart is set on a RR, do some research and proceed. Reliably has been an issue with RR in the past. I’d suggest purchasing a service contract if you plan to keep it longer than the factory warranty. I’d also ask the RR dealer if a loaner vehicle is provided when it’s in for service.

My wife was interested in one so we took it for a test drive. We did not like it. It's very cramped inside and has extremely poor visibility. The ride was just OK. We both loved the Sport but it is a bit too big for our garage.

It looks good, but cramped. The sport and full size are right on the money and hold their value strong. Try a V6 Range Sport if power isn’t important. Still way more power than the 2.0L Velar, better ride height, more comfortable interior, and won’t look like your driving your wife/girlfriends car.
