Ultimate dress watch - Patek Calatrava 5227 or 5296?

Looking for a dress watch to wear for formal occasions and events. I already own the Patek Aquanaut as my daily wear.

Struggling to decide between the two. Help me decide and pick one, but dont forget to explain why!

I've attatched the images below, with the 1st one being 5227R-001 and the 2nd 5296R-010

5227 for the scalloped lugs and the hunters caseback.

5296 for its simplicity and smaller size. I think it looks sharper with its less rounded / structured bezel and I much prefer its markers as well.

Personally I went 3998 as I wanted a platinum dress watch with date back in the day which I still enjoy despite its small 34mm size.

This. I find the 5227R hard to beat.

I'd personally opt for something sans date

Of your options….I personally like the hour markers and bezel/lug shape better on the 5296.
Both work, no wrong choice.

First I agree with this.

Of the two the 5227. I like the RG better and I could see myself wearing it more than the other.

Both work though, no wrong choice.

I prefer the 5296R-010. I have the annual Calendar looks very similar to it.

I agree the 5296 was perfect and I had my sights on one, once it was discontinued I bought the 5196.

Worth noting that these watches feel quite different on the wrist given different case shapes. The 5196 is flat and broad, and not as comfortable for me as the 5227 (surely vice versa for others). Never tried a 5296.

I love my 5227, the 39mm is a great size for me and it wears beautifully with a suit or even jeans and a tshirt (I wear it casually more than I do with a suit).

Hunter case back is fantastic too

While the 5227 has an incredible case, to me the dial is big and boring with weird indexes. The 5296 is classic Patek DNA from the original 96 of the 1930's. with the double index at 12. It is the last of a long legend of watches. It is 38mm but wears larger. I would also look at a 5127, which to me at 37mm, is even more elegant than either reference you are looking at. Of the two I would get a 5296. These has seen a real surge in prices of late so people do like the traditional Calatrava look.

It looks very sharp with the white dial.

5227 as well between the two: case, including case back, and date.
