Purchasing 2 Platonas - Thoughts?
I currently own a WG Sub and a BLRO and love them.
I was looking to add to my collection so I went to an AD and actually tried on both the regular version with brown subdials and the version with all glacier blue dial and glacier blue subdials with the diamond markers. I loved both. I have an opportunity to purchase both of them at 30% off MSRP. I wanted peoples opinions (I already PM Dr. Tom and appreciated his thoughts!) about whether the watches are too similar to have in one collection or are they different enough? I really thought they looked different enough. Finally, I don't flip watches so these would be keepers so I am not worried about losing money selling them on the secondary market. I know I could get a Platona and DD40 in platinum or maybe a Platona and a Patek ....but I really prefer Rolex sports watches above all others...so I wanted everyone's thoughts. Thanks. |

This is ultimately only something you can answer. There are some people who think a green sub and a black sub are too similar, while others who think they are wildly different. Would it be possible to buy one and wear it for a long while? Then decide if you need the other one?

Seems redundant if you plan on wearing them. I would consider buying both and selling one if you want to fool with that.

Too redundant imo.
I’d get the one you like more and then look at something else. PT DD40 is. A killer idea- it’s so much sportier than you think

I wouldn’t own both. I went without diamonds because of the contrast, but the diamond dial is nice too. Perhaps buy the diamond, then purchase the lume dial a la carte, and have them swapped periodically.

Too similar and I think the redundancy would bore you of one and would finally prompt you to sell.

⬆️⬆️⬆️ Agree with this. As an owner of the brown sub-dialed version, I can’t imagine wanting the other....I like the contrast. I’ve owned a couple other Daytonas where the sub-dials didn’t contrast, and wasn’t as attracted to those versions. So for me, I’d look at a different platinum model, if that’s the metal you’re specifically looking for. Just my .02

I would only pick one and get the diamond dialed one. It is a piece that always has me drooling whenever I see it in the display case at my AD (and thankfully, my sales guy has let me handle it every time I visit.)
And if you're married only to the idea of Rolex, I'd then get an Oysterflex WG Daytona to shake things up - they are sufficiently different, yet similar to your original proposition that I could see having both. |

I would just pick one......take your time a bit and see which you gravitate toward and make the call. Great discount!

As others said, sounds like too much redundancy. I suggest buy one now. Use it for some time then you will see if you want the other or not. I bet you will be satisfied with it.

Is the price contingent on buying both?
I'd go with one for now and see if the desire sticks for the other |

Not a fan of the colour combination on these models but happy you are going to keep them and not concerned about losing $$'s.

I'd go with only one and put the money towards another one.

Wish I was in your situation, but I would take both if you can take off 30%.

I have multiple Subs so can relate to your dilemma.
Those two would be a little too similar for me. If you like Daytona’s there are other options you might want to consider. The silver and black WG on rubber is a great looker.

Can you see yourself standing by your watch collection and deciding whether you are going to wear the diamond dial or regular dial one, and how different they might be at that point in time?? as in you are in the mood for diamond today, or not??
I think they are too similar. I would get the one with diamond and then look at other sport models for the second one.

This would be my choice. I think two platonas is redundant as well.

You’re on the right path talking to Dr. Tom - I think you will love them both.
To me it’s easy to say go for it - the brown-ringed subdials for work, sport & play - diamond dial for evening & dress wear. Sent from my iPhoneX using Tapatalk

I generally don't like precious stones on a Rolex but this one is the exception in my book. in answer to your question i would feel they were a bit redundant and probably opt for one of the Platona's and then go for either a plat DD, YG Green dial GMT or WG Pepsi GMT. Whatever floats your boat though...if you are in a position to pick up two of them at once you can do whatever you like. I always say with enough time and money one can do just about anything except get a Steel Ceramic Daytona at MSRP.
