Any opinion on this one?
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Rolex-Oyster-...QQcmdZViewItem
Need your expert opinions :-) Son is nearly 18 so thinking... As this will be a pickup / handshake deal, I'm more inclined to give it a go. |

Make it conditional to Rolex Melbourne check, and I think it's a good deal.

I had the same watch, and it's very nice.
The seller's 94% rating isn't too impressive though.

Thanks. I'm checking with the seller about the details, e.g. Rolex Melb check etc.

Reading the auction description (and many others like it), what I want to know is, "who are these people that give $$$$ Rolexes as 'gifts' and why do the recipients not want them?"
This guy has apparently been given not one, but TWO Datejusts as gifts?!?!? Wouldn't mind someone giving ME a Rolex or two as a gift Cheers d. |

Rollies in Asia are frequently used as gifts e.g. to top sales person, so as to motivate the entire team, or as kickbacks. Come to think of it, this type of rollies are cheaper than to fly a guy (and partner) to Europe or US (from Asia) for a week.
A guy in my company got a rollie for his 40 year service. "Rolex Melbourne Check" - Rolex has an office in Melbourne, Australia. |

The watch seem real. The story on the watch's provenance seems a little bogus IMO.

Kai, at 34 mm it's a fairly small watch. Would it be appropriate for your son?
If you and your son like it, then bid on the condition that you can take it to Rolex and have it authenticated before any money changes hands. Here's their contact info: Rolex Australia Pty Ltd 70 Collins Street Melbourne 3000 Victoria tel:+61 3 9654 3988 hours: Mon-Fri: 8:30am - 5:00pm

Thanks Al, I got a Speedy reduced and it looks reasonably ok. the speedy is at 35.5mm so should be no problems.

i saw that on ebay too, but at AU$2.2k starting bid, i think ill pass this time round. the series is Axxxxxx, that would make it somewhere in between 1998-2000, which doesnt look too bad. he also mention that it was about 8years ago, which dates back to mid1999-early2000, so i think this is a legit, however the story leaves plenty to be desired

Well, an update. I won the auction. The seller agreed to get it checked by Rolex in Melbourne. However, Rolex will not provide any "on the spot" service like authenticity check (costs $100 anyway, which I'm happy to pay), or service quotation. The watch has to be left there for 1-2 days.
One question, has anyone seen a fake watch with tunnel bezel? Thx Kai |

Hiya,
Just got the watch. I have asked the seller to goto RSC to get an authentication check, unfortunately I couldn't get to the city to pick it up with him from RSC, I arranged to pick it up at his home. Here are the shots - I have taken the band off to check the serial number, which matched with the serial number in the books as well as the RSC authentication check certificate. However, the watch feels light (compared to my Omega speedy), and the hologram looks wrong. Have I been robbed? |

Kai, thanks for the PM.
I had a thorough look at the watch, and I am 100 percent positive that the watch shown ISa real Rolex. The dial did seem odd to me at first glance since it says "SWISS MADE" and it's an A-series watch (Nov. 1998 and onwards), but on the other hands Tritium was banned in 1998 where Luminova took over (until 2000 when SuperLuminova came). Now, I would have expected the dial to say "SWISS" only, but since the A-series end in January 2000, there's nothing odd about that. The watch shown is just one of the first having a SuperLuminova dial and hands and must thus be from around 2000. Click here to read more about Rolex lume. However, still you must consider who the SELLER is. As stated, with only 17 deals completed and a feedback of only 94,7 %, you want to make sure that the seller is trustworthy, meaning that he actually will sell you the watch pictured, send it to you and fullfill his part of the deal. Try reviewing his feedback and see exactly what the negative comments are about. And take your precautions accordingly. But as stated, the watch PICTURED is real. Best of luck!

Everything looks right about the watch. The stamping on the case looks good. The numbers match the paperwork. The brush finish on the side of the case looks good. The band attached to the watch looks like from the date range. The stamping on the band looks good. IMHO I think you got the real McCoy. I think it's a good looking watch. How much would that be in US dollars?

Anyway, since I couldn't fix the band back without scratching it, plus I need to get an extra link fitted (it only got 12 links) I'll bring it to the RSC when I'm not that busy at work. Many thanks for your help! Kai |

Ok, another update. I went to RSC today and added 2 links to it ($66 each). All is good. Here's a wrist shot.
