Help with Vintage Datejusts. Try #2

I originally made a post here inquiring about vintage datejust’s but it was moved to the WTB classifieds section. I am not looking to buy online, I was just looking for some advice & suggestions on vintage DJ’s. I guess it was my mistake for making it look too much like a WTB thread.

Can anyone offer me some vintage Datejust model suggestions? What to look for as well as what to avoid? Also, how much should I be expecting to pay for one? I would like this to be my everyday beater watch, so I'm not looking for anything to break the bank.

I am looking for a vintage datejust with either a white or silver dial. Ideally I would like to have it on a leather strap but a jubilee wouldn't hurt if I could get it at a low price. I want something I can wear as easily with jeans and a tee shirt as with a suit.I am located in NYC and I'm wondering what are some reputable places to look.

depends on alot of factors, ss dj's on jubilees with no box/papers you can get for 1500-2k, tt dj on jubilee no box/papers 2000-3000. usually on a leather strap your still looking at about the same as with a jubilee maybe a few hundred dollars cheaper or the same price with a gold bezel. older originals in like perfect shape can demand a bit more as a full set. ebay is a good price reference, or just look here. as for good places to buy in NY i have no idea.

Definitely would like an all stainless steel model. How much extra do you think it usually is for the watch to include papers.

I just bought a 1601 DJ, no box or papers, from a TRF seller here for $1,600, and I absolutely love it. Mine came with its jubilee bracelet, but I like it better on a NATO strap. (See pic)

In any case, I think a DJ is a great way to get into the vintage rolex game without paying an arm and a leg.

Btw - my 1971 DJ is currently keeping better time than my new submariner.

You need to do some homework. There's a sticky right here in this forum of vintage watch dealers. Spend some time looking throught their sites and you'll start to learn a lot about what's out there.

The stainless versions can be a pretty good bargain, and my limited experience makes me feel that the ss jubilees hold up better over the long haul. If you look around and are patient, getting one for less than $2,000 w/a decent bracelet is doable. Also, stainless jubilees are "reasonable" on the pre-owned market, while tt ones are expensive. You can probably pick up a used one for $500-- which also means you won't save a huge amount buying a stainless DJ without the bracelet.

I like the white dial DJ's, but the silver ones are a real classic.

Just to be more specific. 1601 was never all SS. 1601 was either WG, YG, or RG and SS. If you want all SS then look for a 1603 (machined bezel, where as 1601 have fluted bezels, and 1600 have smooth bezels). As far as prices, $1500 to $2500 is reasonable if you're buying it from an individual, if you go to a dealer and expect a 1 year warranty, a complete COA, ... then expect to pay $2,500 to $3,500

In New York, here's the thread: http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=109059

I would suggest checking out John Buckley aka Tuscany Rose first.

My 1969 1601 with folded jubilee without b/p was 1600aud servicing was another 500 on top of that though
Don't pay anymore than 2k
Expect the jubilee to have a lot of stretch, so I wear mine with a hirsch lizard strap

Very very difficult to find a vintage DJ with correct boxes- I don't even think anyone knows what boxes they originally came in- most of the info re. boxes on the net deals with sports watches

Looking for a TT 16013 at the moment, expecting to pay 2.5-3k max

This might be mind blowing to some of you TRFers.

But I might be dipping into a 1601 SS DJ soon. I need something that I can get my feet wet with.
