Pet peeve
I am constantly on the look for a few vintage pieces that I would like to own. Unfortunately it is not uncommon lately to find a watch being sold by a dealer with a good reputation representing parts of the watch as original when clearly they are not original but very likely authentic. Let me elaborate. A PCG 1675 GMT with a matte dial and without gilt lettering being advertised as the original dial. This is not the original dial but an authentic service dial. I saw another 1675 GMT for sale with the dial being described as original, but later on in the description of the watch it read that the dial may have been replaced by Rolex during a service. Well is it original or not? To me the word original means the dial, part, etc that came with the watch at purchase. To me authentic means that is in fact a real part and not fake. Am I the only one that sees it this way.

I agree with you also.
I think it is a play with words. They can say "it has an original dial"...which is misleading, if it is not the original that came with the watch. You always see on Ebay bracelets, dials, inserts "for" Rolex. A person with no knowledge will easily fall for this as well. I think, also, a lot of times these dealers may not know an original from a refinished dial. Now on this forum, we have some folks that can easily differentiate the original dials, i.e., Mark I, II, IV etc., replaced on a later model (even if it is 3-5 years older). Bless this knowledge! |

I hear you loud and clear..... the only thing I can add is --> buy from reliable sellers who stands by their watches 100%. Do not buy from novices who are not knowledgeable regarding vintage watches.

Most of my vintage pieces come from 4-5 well know sellers/collectors.  (But I am on a self imposed moratorium until 2010 )

I totally agree (and share the same pet peeve). It's particularly annoying when the bezel insert on a 1680 is clearly from a 16800 or later model, or when the pearl is Luminova instead of tritium, or the hands are clearly later additions (or also Luminova), yet none of these are mentioned. Caveat emptor.
