SubC lugs not as big as most believe.

Most photos show lugs that appear to be quite square but in the flesh the watch is perfection. Photos at the right angle show the lugs are just fine.

Totally agree! I was looking at that yesterday. 100% angled. Love how the lugs make the watch feel solid on the wrist.

The lugs will always be considered thick because they are always compared by watch enthusiasts to the previous reference.
Taken in isolation as an individual reference, the watch is perfectly fine and looks normal. No normal person(non watch crazy wis) ever looks at a Submariner and says, boy those lugs look big. Normal people don’t even know what lugs are.

I love the way the Submariner looks, if they trim them, cool, if they don’t, cool too.

Well said. If we prefer thinner lugs, there are 5-digit submariners to accommodate us. And if one likes the new reference, that’s great! The general public has no idea. Just WIS.

I’ve preferred the 5-digit Sub for most of my journey. But, my only Sub right now is the WG 116619, and I love it, so I am straddling the line.

In this hobby - something for everyone!

This is true. If Rolex had introduced the current case in the 1980s, and then changed it to a 5-digit style case more recently, there would be zillions of threads complaining about pointy, pencil-sharpener lugs and lamenting about how the previous case was 'classic'...

Agree when compared to the previous model, the current lugs are more pronounced but in and of it self, they’re fine to me.

Lugs are perfection. As many as like the 5 digit over the 6 digit Sub I wonder if they hate the current GMTs too, since it’s essentially the same case?

Love my Sub, hate the lugs. The SD43 has great lugs, as do many other references, just definitely not the Sub.

say what you want, those lugs are intentionally thick/wide. The 5 digits have better proportions, imho.

Diameter of SD43 dial/bezel is so large it’s hard to notice the smaller lugs.

It is interesting, first reaction when I looked at this photo I thought the lugs don’t look that different. Also that I like the look of the sub more. The sub has mass appeal. Maybe, just maybe, it is the larger lugs that make them more popular. I know the 5 digits were also popular, but something about the 6 digits that makes it feel special. At the end of the day, it is the maxi case that separates the dive watches and gmt from the rest of the Rolex watches. If they slightly trim the lugs or not like they did with the new gmt, there is either the maxi case crowd or not.

I also agree, I initially was not a fan of the modern case but it's beautiful in person and on the wrist.

Have to agree, for me, the SD43 does have better proportions than the SubC

I bought my 114060 before I was on this site, thought the submariner was a great watch. I then joined TRF, fast forward to a year later and the lugs started bothering me. Before I got into watches I didn’t even think about it, but once I saw it I couldn’t unsee it. This site can be bad and good for collecting.

It's all about proportion. If one keeps the current case size it would look more proportional with a 22 mm bracelet instead of the 20 mm that was proportional to the previous case. This would thin the lugs from the inside.

My first Rolex was the Sea-Dweller 116600. I chose it because it appeared more proportional and wore smaller than the current Submariner.

When I tried on a 6-digit, the wide lugs were a deal breaker for me, the proportions were just too much of a bulky rectangular-looking case in my opinion. But to each their own preference.

The lug difference looks much worse in pictures than on the wrist. I owned a 16610 and now a 114060 and I actually like it better.

100% agree with you. I think the lugs are perfect and wouldn't change a thing on the 6 digit Sub.

I love them the way they are.

Honestly, I would be very disappointed if they changed them. I doubt that will happen, however.

I prefer the more squared off look of the SubC. It reminds me of the original 1920’s era Rolex Oyster.

The current Submariner is perfect IMO and I love mine. The SD43 looks too big and out of proportion to the classic 40mm Sub. And the Submariner sits perfectly flat and comfy on my 7.5 wrist all day every day.
