Heading to San Juan Monday

Any members here from PR??? Taking the wife and staying downtown. Looking for stuff to do as we are there until Thursday and I am not a big pool or beach guy. Like history and architecture which is part of the reason we chose San Juan!!

go to old san juan. lots of shops and restaurants.

I think that is within walking distance to the hotel. Will most certainly make sure that’s on the list. Thanks Elliot.

Is a short notice trip. The prices were right to use Southwest points and Marriott points. 32k Southwest points and $22. 150k Marriott points and $300 to upgrade to an Oceanside suite. Cheap vacation.

Caribe Hilton was my go to hotel on the way back from the West side of the Island. I’ve always enjoyed staying there, especially on the weekends. The lobby bar was always nice with nice music playing while you enjoy a drink and they have Morton’s onsite for dinner.

If you have a car, go check out Arecibo telescope and the rainforest (El Yunque). El Morro Fort was always nice to walk around as well. Bioluminescent Bay on Vieques Island was very nice. Also you can go to the Bacardi tour, it was nice. Although I preferred Ron Del Barrilito rum.

We will add these to the list. Do not have a car but can easily grab one at the airport.

We are staying at the Marriott La Concha Renaissance. Location seemed good. Reviews are good, even recently and after the hurricane. And apparently the Casino is worth a try!!!!

Caribe Hilton ....beauty! Starbucks AND Morton's in the hotel....

Mofongo in Old San Juan (Raices restaurant) is a delicacy!

As Gerardo stated, mofongo is a must. I would also say mojitos are a must. Two restaurants that I enjoy in Old San Juan are Barrachina and Dragonfly (Asian inspired cuisine).

I looked at the Hilton. Looks nice but I used up most of my Hilton points over fall break last year and don’t travel much after that so we alternate where we stay.

Will check these places out for sure. Morton’s is a cant miss generally.

based on the hurricane you should be getting a good deal imo. the island is hurting for money from tourism.

If the hotel and area are as nice as the recent reviews indicate we are getting a pretty good deal. Based on the points guy’s point values for Southwest and Marriott points I don’t think we have ever gone on a trip this cheap.

Does anyone know if there is Uber on the island? Some places we look up online say “take uber here” and some places say there is not uber in the island. Confusing. If not, I am going to rent a car. Just don’t want to spend the $200 plus parking it at the hotel to use once.

Why not just use a local taxi? I'm sure there will be taxi's.

Uber is on the island. You can get anywhere and super cheap. Go to the fort. Maybe El Morro. I forget the name. All around there is amazing architecture. Walk to governors mansion as well.

Another vote for el yunque (sp?). Old San Juan is also a must. Been there 3-4 times.

On the west side of the island there’s a little town called Ricon that’s known for world class surfing. It’s a great area if you’re looking for a low key place to lay on the beach, plenty of nice restaurants, etc.

The town is called Rincon and yes it is a surfer haven. I used to stay at the Rincon Beach Resort in many occasions since it was kind of close to my work down there. If you are into scuba diving you can go to Desecheo Island. I used a dive shop in Rincon for it. It was nice.

Starting to get excited. We will just use cabs/uber to get around. With the spotty data service I am hearing about driving without would not be ideal anyhow.

you could rent a car as well. be careful with uber. stick to marked cabs imo.

Hi, I live in PR and can tell you that Uber works but they are not allow to get you at the airport, just take you. Data service in San Juan works great, like nothing happend. Also depends on your cel company.

If your are staying at La Concha walking to Old San Juan it’s a bit far depending on your excersice level. You can visit El Morro and San Cristobal Forts their awesome. El Yunque Rain Forest it’s currently closed do to Hurracaine Maria.

Raíces has one of the best Mofongos in town. If you have any specific questions let me know.
