The chrono fever
I've decided to keep my 5712R instead of trading it for 5980/1A, could've been a worse trade ever lol. however the chrono lust is still there, was thinking maybe adding it to pair up with the 5712R, (steel/gold) or pick a non-nautilus Patek to keep the variety going? Potential aim would be the 5146R, the 5960P in blue dial is the ultimate Patek I wanted to have, but I guess I'm going to save it for a special occasion. Should I stick to the steel chrono or go for something I don't have in my existing collection?

I don't think you can go wrong with anything if you hesitate between the 5146, the 5960 and if you consider the 5170 pictured above.
The 5146 is a real classic from Patek, its case shape would add variety to your Patek collection and the addition of an annual calendar would make it very special. The 5960 would have the same complication (minus the moonphase indicator, which you already have on your 5712 so it's not that bad) and the addition of a chronograph with a bullseye register like the 5980 you've been admiring for some time (as far as I'm concerned I much prefer the 5960 to the 5980). The 5170 may not be as intricate as the two other ones but it really has a classic look. Breguet numerals are always a great addition to a dial and a nice and simple manual winding chronograph looks always good in one's collection. As far as I'm concerned, if the 5960 is a watch you've been dreaming about you should aim for it and be happy. If you really cannot right now than I'd say that the 5170 would look more different when compared to your 5712 but the 5146 would probably have more useful complications. Have you thought about a Calatrava as well or do you prefer a complicated watch?

The 5170G is a killer piece, I love the Breguet numerals and the movement is spectacular looking.

I fell in love with this one:
Too bad I can't afford it. All Patek chrono's are great, you should get the one you like the most. |

Calatrava is indeed a classic piece but I was never drawn to its simplicity. The 5960 is quite a serious Patek and I wish I can pull the trigger on that one right away, but really like to compare it with a few other models before making my decision. I have now put the 5170 in my top 3 purchase list, it looks absolutely stunning, it's got the pure Pateks DNA,very classic and elegant. As for the 5980/1A, I don't know what's with this watch? I have been going back and forth on it quite a bit, getting really indecisive whether I should get it or not, i love its thickness and sporty look and i own a few sports watches, but the 5980 does stand out more with bulls eye. I guess the only thing that puts me off is I already have a 5712r, so getting a repeat model would be kind of unnassesary. At this point I'm just going to do more comparisons and find out which one really sings to me. |
