Just after some advice on buying one of these. I know nothing about them other than I want one. Can owners let me know if they are reliable time keepers and how they compare with rolex movements.(Better,same,worst,just different)

How do people cope with the manual wind function every day and I would assume the servicing costs would be less on account of less complex movement. Does this translate into better performance due to less moving parts for the manual wind version?

Welcome to the forum Palette.

Panerais are great watches. They are accurate and reliable, and carry a solid warranty. Just be sure to buy from an AD to avoid getting stuck with a fake, of which there are many.

Re winding - Very simple. Just remember to do it. I wind mine before going to bed, they will go for about 2 days.

I am the proud owner of 6 Panerais, am fighting myself not to get another. That's how addictive they are. The strap collecting bug will also bite you soon after your purchase.

i sometimes forget to wind mine every 2 days, i think mine is losing time, should i send it in for warranty.

The entry level manual winding Panerais use Unitas pocket watch movements, which, while reliable and highly modified by Panerai is still a Unitas for $4-5K.

I'm not paying $4K for the dial and case, but that's just me. Personally, I'd save up for an automatic Panerai, but their in-house movements are in the insane price range. One could get a steel Patek for what they charge.

Own and have owned Panerai for the last 4 years. Love em and don't find any other watches that stick around in the collection. I would recommend trying some on and decide for yourself if they sing to you.

Im thinking of getting the luminor submersible. Im finding a little difficult to gather some info on these watches. Can someone please explain if this is a inhouse movement, are they more expensive to service than a seadweller and I really would like to know how well they are keep time and are they consistant in there performance?

Someone can correct me if I flub, but here goes...
The Subs have ETA movements which have been modified by Panerai. There are a number of different models, and they vary in price, depending upon size, case type, features, and depth ratings. Here are some models you will want to investigate: 24 (SS), 25 (Ti), 199 (Waffle dial), 243 (1950 case, and staring me in the face

), 194 (47mm, 2500m rating). I'm sure I'm forgetting some models, and there are some that are discontinued (64 "La Bomba" for example), but since 'replaced' with something in the same design ballpark. They are excellent timekeepers. I'd expect servicing to be in the same range as an SD, but hopefully someone more knowledgeable about that will confirm.

You might also check out www.paneristi.com for a wealth of information on the brand.

Many that I know, yes. Both men & women who wear 44mm Panerai watches.

The 44mm looks GREAT on the wrist IMHO, even better than a 40mm. Many don't agree with this though. Many Panerai watches are COSC certified, therefore they should be just as accurate as a Rolex.

Yep, that's what has kept me from pulling the trigger on either the 177 or 88. I really like both models, but the 88 still brings around 5k range used it causes me to pause.

The reason why Panerais sit well on small wrists is because the lugs are tiny, so the 44-45mm sizes are a bit larger than they really are.

From what I can tell, a lot of members own Panerai and Rolex. Panerai is a completely different watch, with a strong following and hard core collector base.

We can't know what is a fad, and what isn't. Only time will tell.

My opinion is that Panerai will not go out of style and will always be cherished by at least a small collectors group. Their quality, reliability, resale value, and exclusivity are excellent.

have a panerai marina, when you look at the sapphire cystal at certain angles the inage becomes distorted and looks like a wavy bubble. does this mean the crystal is not sapphire, is it some cheap mineral glass? a friend told me sapphire crystal will never distort the image or become wavy, please help me to understand if i got a cheap knockoff watch here

If you buy a panerai, do NOT buy them from a AD. Call the Panerai Boutique in Bev Hills, CA. That is the only USA Panerai Boutique. There are a handful of ADs but the Boutique is a much better place to buy from.
ADs know little about pams. Chad at Panerai is excellent in customer service. They overnight (including sat overnight) free. Include freebe stuff, when you ask. I for example have a 7" wrist, the small stock panerai strap doesnt fit me well. I bought a 164 from them, and they included a larger alligator strap $294 worth and gave it free with the smaller strap as well.
I couldnt be more disappointed with my AD, but the Boutique is the way to go!
