AP Apprasial

Hi all,

My non-AD is charging $100 for an appraisal for my new RO purchase. Insurance requests it. What do you make of this request? My other dealer in Boston would always drop one in the mail no questions asked and no charge.

Thanks for the feedback -T

If you purchased from them that is pretty crappy service IMO

If you have a receipt of your new purchase, why do you need an appraisal? Are you trying to insure it for more than what you paid?

i was wondering the same thing. My US insurer doesn't care. My UK insurer on the other hand, if it isn't a Rolex it needs a professional appraisal or they won't insure it and the receipt isn't relevant to them. They need a document with date of purchase, replacement value (or price paid if you want to insure for that), owner's name, model number, serial number. A receipt typically doesn't contain all of this info. If its just a till receipt it won't even have your name on it. The main thing seems to be definitively linking the watch/paperwork to the owner and with AP there is no way to do that as the warranty book doesn't include the owners name unlike a Rolex warranty card which will have your name on it. Thats my experience with appraisals.

But to the OP's point maybe its because he bought it at a non ad. Im guessing the insurer wants an appraisal because the receipt from the seller who isn't an AP authorized seller is giving them a red flag.

I would speak to the manager and respectfully request that they waive the fee for this service. I would also be aware of it the next time that I purchase to ensure that it is included in the deal that we workout. If he declines, tell him that you would like to return the watch. Not that you would but just to rattle him. They do not want the watch back. I would also have a conversation about the influence of social media and your activity there. In the end you will be no worse off than you are now.

Crazy they're charging you if it was purchased there. They probably already have one saved, all they need to do is change name/address/serial number.

You said it's a non AD? But they sold you a new RO? So it's like a reseller?

im confused now. Your insurance wants an "appraisal" which typically means from an AD(authorized by the brand) or a professional appraisal from someone with credentials as a valuer. You bought the watch effectively from "some random guy" as far as the insurance company is concerned. He wants to charge you for the appraisal, but are you even sure your insurance company will accept an appraisal from some random guy who sold you a pre-owned watch even if you got one since he isn't an authorized reseller and also has a vested interest in authenticating/making sure the value is what it should be?

Best bet is to get an official appraisal from someone which credentials and pay $100 for it. As thats about what it should cost.

I certainty follow your logic although my insurance company has taken non-AD Appraisals in the past (I typically buy preowned). Wonder if the receipt will suffice..

any time i have been asked for an appraisal, a receipt is a no go. I get my wife's and my watches/jewlery appraised fairly regularly so it has never been an issue as i have all of the documents if requested.

Im just saying if you have to pay to get it done then get an actual valuer and not who you bought the watch from to do it. They can do your entire collection at the same time as well. Its good piece of mind in any case as if you buy preowned typically you should have an independent party value them and not the guy who sold it to you.

you can get someone who values items like jewelry/watches for a living to do it. You don't have to use AP as i have no idea what they do (probably just authenticate not value). Your insurance company should be able to help with providing names. The main point is that they are independent appraisers (have professional certifications) and not the same person as who you just bought a watch from. $100 sounds about right as thats what i pay in the UK and things tend to be more expensive here. If you do many items the price per item goes down.

why would 'You' do that? Aren't you buying a $40k+ watch for like 50% off? So following your own advise you are just going to insure for price paid, not replacement value?

Some people need to get appraisals for many different reasons.

You can get it for whatever you want. You just pay more of a premium. I'm not really that attached to anything. I just care to get my money back. But if I told them 35k, then sure they would do it for 35k. If you pay 40+k for an RG 44mm I can't help you.
