Golden Ellipse 5938r in Precious Metal Bracelet

I am still scratching my head. But what do you think of Patek’s recent move to add a bracelet option on its Golden Ellipse model?

Are the 70/80 vibes making a comeback like what Piaget and Vacheron Constantin did recently on their watch models - Polo and the 222, and Patek is merely following suit?

Mr John Reardon of Collectability has been harping on “this year is going to be the year of the Ellipse”. Is that what we are seeing finally?

To be transparent, I own a Golden Ellipse rose gold in leather version bought last year after a four-year wait (yes, it’s definitely hard to come by). Owning one was a nostalgic purchase for me, seeing a couple of my late Dad’s clients wearing such in the 70s, and I’ve been wanting to own one on its more moderm size. But I cannot fathom wearing a gold bracelet on an Ellipse as it takes away the understatement nature of the said timepiece in my opinion. Though to be clear, I am not complaining.

Lastly, if I were to read the Patek Philippe catalogue of available models, looks like more of the 70s timepieces are being featured -- Nautilus, Gondolo, some Calatrava and grand complications. But I may be wrong.

Here is a wrist shot of my 5738r in its original black leather strap. I called this my Tuxedo watch.

Many thanks for your insights!

Another Ellipse fan here, I have two and wear my blue 3747 most days as you can see from the scuff marks in the pic! I’m hoping one day Patek will make the blue dial model with the larger case as that would be my replacement.
I think the gold bracelet model is more likely to be worn in warmer countries, I was in Dubai in November and spotted a large amount of vintage gold dress watches by Patek and Piaget.

First, congratz for your Ellipse it looks great, I tried it myself.

I've been asking myself that same question, we definitely see here and there shy samples of 70's-80's elements. I would say it's quite local, depending on regions. So it depends on where you live.

I would say it should be (haven't seen such shiny colored gold polished bracelet in the metal) very visible. If you already wore a colored gold RO/Nautilus then it would be easier.

My feeling on Patek's catalogue is that they provide a very few pieces (as some other brands you mentionned do) but that it's aimed at a very few people claiming them. Not something we'll see often. For instance, there is no Gondolo anymore for men in the catalogue and nothing for the 30th anniversary last year (they can't make anniversary celebration everytime but still).

So do it if you really enjoy it, if you think your might be able to wear it in your life context but my opinion is that it's not (yet) a significant flow ? I guess there is more demand for yellow gold again though.

Your version is definitely communicating an absolute and unique, less traditional, elegance. And it goes well nowadays with a more casual outfit too (https://www.hightime-reviews.com/pat...-and-pictures/).

Hi scurfa! Thanks for chiming in. Love your blue dial and yellow gold version of the Ellipse especially with the date on. I’ll be on the same boat with you and will get one as soon as Patek was to issue the OG Ellipse in that combo.

Yes, I forgot about it that the bracelet is more for the humid temperature location given the higher propensity to sweat and create marks and damage on the leather strap. Thanks for that input!

Dear Vasco:

Many thanks for your inputs and for sharing the High-Time Reviews articles on the Golden Ellipse.

Some of the thoughts that were sufficiently captured from your post —

- Majestic dressy : that’s the adjective that I would associate the Ellipse due to combination of ebony sunburst dial and the onyx gem set into the crown. In fact, the r version won me over the platinum blue combo which I found it to be rather plain aesthetically.

- the 70’s - 80’s element and the 70 old school scent : those certainly evoke a big smile on my face and I can certainly associate the Golden Ellipse in the era of the Nautilus and Royal Oak and also with the Charlie perfume of the 70s.

- That Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse model isn’t the kind of objects that reflect a trend, it is the ones that make and define trends.

Lastly, the article mentioned something about Thierry Stern’s decision to discontinue the 5711 Nautilus which is done to avoid confining Patek into a one trick pony model. I would hasten to add two thoughts that I’ve read somewhere:

- Thierry’s bold decision to gradually kill the Stainless Steel line of the Nautilus and moving them to the higher price precious metals Nautilus, thus giving the brand plenty of leeway to introduce other SS models that are becoming popular. Case in point: 5212a and 5935a World Time Chronograph.

- While the Ellipse no longer dominates the company’s production, however, its importance to Patek’s identity is paramount. I read that many times Thierry has considered discontinuing the model, but decided to keep it because, in part, as Thierry said, “It’s like keeping a bit of the spirit of my grandfather.”

Great read on the articles you have shared and here’s hoping for more nostalgic releases from Patek in the future.

I’d go vintage rather than a new one. I like the watch though!

Very interesting thoughts Rolexavidfan, I'm even more sensitive to these 70's-80's sents and atmosphere that I was born in the 1970's and also have my father's Speedy Mark IV and bracelet calatrava as a background. Not mentionning the interior styling, such a great era.

I'm glad they renewed the Ellipse with the 5738 as it means they are here to stay another while :)

It's definitely an aesthete watch.

Any modern size of the vintage designed Ellipse would have been perfect for me.

Thanks Vasco! Almost like you, I grew up in an environment of the 70s and a lot of the watch reissue really resonated with me. Like the Nautilus, the Royal Oak, even the Speedy and the Sub, I own these pieces but in their modern iteration and way before these timepieces were sort of hyped up by the current generations and dealers. Nothing wrong with hyping and it feels good that these nostalgic pieces have already caught up with them.

As to wearing a gold bracelet on a timepiece, that has not been an option for me. The nearest was a DD40 but even that it has to be a WG version for its understatement.

I’m wearing my DD40 onyx right now in its natural environment, a Las Vegas casino.

I love PM bracelet watches. I’m not sure if Wellendorff made any bracelets for vintage Ellipse but if so that’d be the one I’d like to have. Both my wife and I collect Wellendorff jewelry so that’s like a two in one.

Cool write up but to be honest the modern ellipse looks too big on you, I’d rather buy a vintage Ellipse that fits you better.

I really love the new one on the incredible bracelet but I’m not sure if I won’t look like Scarface or Pablo Escobar with that watch

Thank you for your honest opinion. Most of my timepieces are in the 40mm range and I prefer the watch face to cover my entire wrist.

My only vintage timepiece is a hand-me-down Omega Seamaster 1967 era that I am not accustomed to wearing because of the small dial. Hence, that's orobably the reason why the Vintage Ellipse does not sing to me. But yes, maybe a vintage piece of of the smaller size may look better on my puny wrist,

Thank you very much for sharing one possible bracelet maker for vintage Ellipse.

Incidentally I am wondering if Patek will sell the gold bracelet for the owners of the 50th anniversary 5738r.
That will probably an icing on the Ellipse cake.

Whatever makes you feel good and sings to you. Wear what you like, could also be the angle etc
But there are many small amazing vintage pateks that are much cheaper I’d consider them
