Diver all day long. Why? Peerless finishing, iconic design, mesmerizing dial, terrific movement (the 3120 is considered by many to be one of the best contemporary automatic movements on the market today) and in spite of its haute pretense it remains a fully ISO-certified diving watch. Frankly speaking, there really is no comparison here based strictly on horological merit (movement, finishing, pedigree, etc).

That said, our rationale for buying the watches that we do is rarely purely objective in nature, and as we have seen, many of the reasons that some of us love the Diver are the exact reasons that others don't. The Royal Oak aesthetic had always been a polarizing one, with its detractors at times being as passionate as its fans. No biggie.

As for the DSSD, I have a lot of love for that watch. Indeed, I had one for a couple of years and most likely I'll own another in the future (I sold it to help fund my Jumbo). As a tool watch, it's clearly superior to the Diver, but then such criteria don't make a while lot of sense when were discussing $10K+ watches. Still, it's the only contemporary Rolex that I have any real desire to own

My Diver:

And yes, folks, it's perfectly capable in the water:

My old DSSD:

They're both great watches in their own right.

Regards,
Adam

PS - Of course, in the unlikely event that I'm wreck diving on the Andrea Doria, I'll take the DSSD.

Diver all the way for me, the DSSD is just to top heavy and un-proportioned.

Also owned a deepsea and to be honest I miss it! I wear my Ap RB 1 as a my everyday watch but still rate the DSSD as a rugged daily that can take whatever is thrown at it! ImageUploadedByTapatalk1353353463.924976.jpg

The AP diver is in a different league. Then again it does cost a lot more.

Then again I don't think any Rolex can compare to any AP in the same price range.

Then again if you told me I could only have one it would be the DS as for me the diver isn't as flexible.

Guys...the AP is AWESOME. I see no flaws, love the design and absolutely have no idea why anyone would even consider not buying it. Please don't even consider the DSSD for another minute...there's just no need when you have the AP!

To be honest, I think there's probably not a need for any other watch in the whole world...this is the end all, be all. Anyone that disagrees w/ my opinion is obviously either, 1) blind, 2) brain-dead or 3) both 1 & 2.

Again, in case you couldn't figure it out, the AP is the only choice...I love it and can't see why others would think (or even worse, vocalize) differently.
Totally agree with you, and I know I'm being biased but I can't help it..After getting my 1st AP ROC, I've never considered any other brands anymore - having owned, throughout these years, watches by Sinn, Omega, IWC, Panerai & Rolex...They are all very good watches, but I realised AP is really in a different league..For me, this is irreversible..

AP Diver vs DSSD thickness

I purchased the DSSD a couple months ago. Love the watch however the weight always seemed off balance (top heavy).
I prefer > 43mm watches so it was the obvious choice at Rolex. The other challenge is when i tried to wear it with a dress shirt buttoned. Just no way.
Im looking at the AP Diver and was curious if anyone wears it with a buttoned cuff? If i cant, ill go with the 15400 but just prefer the diver style.
Thanks for the feedback!

AP Diver by a mile... I personally really dont like the Deep Sea. The proportions on the case are pretty horrible and completely destroy the lines and case size of the Submariner which got it to perfection. The Deep Sea, IMHO is one of Rolex's biggest mistakes in terms of design.

The funky stop-sign, non-functioning bezel cases (w/ garish screws), dials that always seem too cluttered w/ their checker board layouts & hands that always seem way too plain & boring all add up to a watch that just doesn't look good to me.

No disputing their movement & build quality, but I've got to like what I'm looking at when I put a watch on my wrist and the AP's just don't do it for me. I've said it before, but to me the AP looks like something a 12 year old with above average drawing skills would design in the mid 80's.

For that reason alone, I would take the DSSD all day long. Good luck!:

x 2!!!
Try the bezel motion on both watches. What a difference!!!

Ive worn both watches and tho I like the DSSD it is a bit too top heavy and unbalanced whereas the AP is perfectly balanced and just look at that Tapisserie dial, if that doesn't get you going then stick to the DSSD there is just no hope for you!

I was in the same shoes just recently. Diver or Deepsea. I am a huge AP fan.

My opinion, AP Diver, too small, prone to dings and dents.

DSSD - sturdy and tough but strap too thin. Cheaper then Diver

After much though I took the DSSD as I changed it to a Rubber B strap, that made the difference and still almost S$4000+ cheaper then the Diver.

The Rubber B gave the watch a whole new look, unfortunately afte 1 day of wear, it was taken from me by my Dad. He now wears it daily, sigh...

AP watches are probably the ugliest watches on the market. With Hublot a close second.

We all have different tastes but there's a way of expressing our feelings. But I guess you don't care.

However, your now deleted post above earned you some infractions.

You can head two ways with this.

Come back at me or take it and sort out the issue.

Your choice.

The AP Diver is a much classier watch and more under the radar as Rolex is just too common, IMO.

Pulled the AP Diver trigger

Wow, being new Im not familiar with the sensitive issue here. I guess all the forums have strong opinions, I just thought those here might have a slightly elevated communication style! Anyway, all good and fun.
As a followup, I did pull the trigger on the AP diver and it is an absolutely stunning watch. I agree, it must be seen in person to be appreciated and the craftsmanship is amazing. Also, the "rubber" band is so comfortable that I need to check my wrist a few times to see if the Diver was on.
Again, no disrespect to the diver, its definitelh a beafier watch etc. I was just looking for something a little more unique for this one.

Have you tried one one? I used to feel the same way about the Royal Oaks and even Panerais! Now I own 2 of each :P
