When was 'Superlative' Added

Hello all,

I've been researching when the word 'Superlative' was added to the "Officially Certified Chronometer" stamping on dials. I've come to believe it was around 56-58, but if anyone has a definitive answer, I'd very much appreciate it.

It was inconsistent, as certain models, such as Datejust or Day-Date, received the "Superlative" Chronometer designation before others, such as GMT Master and Submariner. By 1960, essentially all models with Chronometer movements were tested to the Superlative standard.

Mid 50’s – I have a 6605 with a 1065 butterfly from 1957 that is marked “Superlative”, although it’s a restored dial, I believe it to be correct.

There’s probably some cross-over between older models and the various movements, but your dates would appear to reflect that ……

My 6605 from 59" is mark superlative and my 6305 from 58" isn't. I think that will depend on the movement inside and how the watch was tested.

I think the first was the Day-Date 6611, with the then-new 1055 movement in 1957.
