If you see them in the metal there is no question. The level of finishing of the AP RO is on another level.

Yes - exactly this. In the photo they look on par but in the hand it’s a totally different matter.

I really liked the VC in pictures and thought it was underrated and a worthy alternative for those unable to get a RO or Nautilus at MSRP. However, on a recent trip I got to see the VC Overseas (albeit not the chrono) and was really underwhelmed. Also got to try on the ROC and RO at the AP boutique and placed a deposit in the RO 15500. To me the steel RO looked as good if not better than WG Rolex.

For sure the AP when it comes to chrono.
I have the non-chrono version of each, in the 15400 APRO and the 47040 Gen 2 VC, and totally love both of them. I much prefer the chrono version of the AP though. The VC went the wrong direction getting away from the guilloche dial, and not a big fan of their subdials in past or present version. The bracelets are both fantastic

I own a AP 14800ST from 1998 and VC 49140 series one chrono from 2002.
Both are fantastic watches and you are splitting hairs when it comes to quality. My (modest) collection has Omega, Rolex, IWC along with these two watches and despite them being between 17 and 21 years old and by far older than my other watches... they are both far far ahead in terms of quality. I personally do not like the egg shape of the series 3 VC overseas. The mismatched size of the chrono sub dials on the series 2 annoy me. However i belwive the series 1 i have matches AP in quality and it comes down simply to personal preference. Both my AP and my VC get similar wrist time. Sent from my SM-N960F using Tapatalk |

AP for me. The only plus point for the VC is that it has a new inhouse movement but overall aesthetics, AP wins. Esp the VC case is too thick.

Ap for the simple reason that the VCs bezel and bracelet aren't on par with the ROs, when it comes to both design and finishing

As a single watch, the third gen VC is definitely more versatile. Better WR, antimagnetic, and quick change bracelet and straps. In house movement a slight edge. Modified F Piguet 1185 is a great movement though.
As part of a collection, I’d get the AP before the VC. That’s what I did with a 25860 and then a 49140. Both have been sold and now my only watch is a 26022/25960. I just need something else for travel and am looking at a VC dual time that I can take in the water when I travel. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I like the photos of the VC, but found it totally underwhelming in the metal. AP all the way in this one

I prefer the AP as well, but it's not like the VC is a chump. Preowned market demonstrates people's preference but also means you can get a great watch for cheaper.

VC overseas is a great watch, it may even be my next piece, but next to an AP RO you can tell the AP edges it but not by a whole lot.

Well, you're on an AP forum, so these opinions don't surprise me, but I've seen both these models in the metal and much prefer the VC. It's a more beautiful, cleaner design, and the finishing is stunning. (Not sure why some people say the AP finishing is higher-end. I didn't see it that way at all.)
I find the tapestry dial on the AP, off-center date window to the hour markers, and all those bezel screws to be way too busy. The VC has a more classic, old-school feel to it and a more aesthetically pleasing balance, especially to the date window and subdials. I also prefer the bracelet design, and with the quick-change rubber and gator strap options, it's no contest. All subjective, of course. I own the new VC Overseas non-chrono with the blue dial, and love the whole line, although the slightly bigger size of the chrono versions was the reason I stuck with the non-chrono. |

I was ready to pull the trigger on the VC, but as others have said I was disappointed when seeing it, especially in comparison to the AP. The finishing of the AP is just on another level.

I'd probably choose the AP for a chrono, only because I don't have any APs at the moment. That said, I own the 4500V Overseas, and think it's worth calling out where I think VC is a winner:
1. Price -- you can find them much cheaper on the gray market, and I don't see them being risky investments 2. Movement -- not only does the VC have a sapphire caseback, but their Geneva-seal movements are absolutely stunning, the type of finishing you see on Pateks in the higher price ranges (note that I agree AP's case/bracelet finishing is better) 3. Three watches for the price of one -- You're comparing the AP against the VC on a bracelet, but don't forget you can swap to the included alligator or rubber straps in 10 seconds or less. Makes all the 3rd gen Overseas super versatile IMHO |

Have had both on the wrist.. and although the VC is a good looking watch, the ROC is a whole different feel to me. I do really like the strap system on the Overseas though

I do not like the overseas design and probably never will. I would opt for the more recent AP ROC panda dial. White with black subdials.

I really tried to like the Overseas in general. Came very close to buying the blue dial model. However 2 things kill it for me on the Overseas series in general:
Case thickness (presumably due to the antimagnetic ring). Bracelet doesn't taper at all to the clasp, and each link is thick. These make the watch wear more like an Omega Seamaster chrono or coaxial Speedmaster chrono (thick and a bit top heavy) rather than equivalent RO or Nautilus chronographs. But kudos to VC for including multiple strap options and being easy to switch them. Wish more manufacturers did that. Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk |

I can’t speak to the chrono VC as much, because I only tried it on at the boutique, but it’s definitely bigger, chunkier and heavier than my “Date” VC Overseas. |

The VC has Hallmark of Geneva certificate? Or is it on the movement only?
I would do VC cause you gotta see the movement, easy strap change and comes with the strap options.

Vacheron Overseas Chronograph v AP RO Chrono
I ended up buying the VC OS Chrono and love it.
To those that say that the VC does not hold up to an AP, I disagree and own a AP 15202. I’ll let the photos do the talking. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
