Unexpected incoming (Caution: this post contains precious metal)

For just over a year now, I’ve had my sights set on acquiring the 116519LN. It started when I finally settled on my watch collection and viewed the Daytona as that one (mythical) addition that would complete the process.

I’ve been in a consolidation mode of sorts over the past two years. Sold the things that got me started in this hobby but which never really “fit” for the long-term. And I doubled down on the brand and sizes that turned out to be just right. The remaining collection is Rolex-heavy but that, as it turns out, is for a reason.

The Daytona hunt has been an interesting process. I knew I wanted the timepiece but was waiting to strike when the moment was right. I’ve come across 2-3 instances over the course of my travels and AD pop-ins, but each time there was something holding me back.

Through all this, there was one sales associate who took the time to get to know me and my interests. Given that this AD was located outside my home country, we had to rely on instant messaging to keep in touch. And on a few occasions I even had to turn down the 116519LN because I couldn’t make travel arrangements fast enough (or cheaply enough to justify ;-)

Long story, only somewhat shorter: The sales associate came through for me at the perfect time. This weekend I was visiting (London) and decided to drop her a note. Two days (and apparently one healthy debate with management) later, she had a fresh 116519LN waiting with my name on it. After having declined a few pieces previously, the associate went to bat for me with her team and it was the relationship that ultimately won me the Daytona.

This is my first PM timepiece. And my first Oysterflex bracelet. So far (2 hours in) all I can say is that it’s incredibly comfortable and a perfect fit on my 7.25” wrist. It joins a BLNR (original) GMT, LVc Sub, Explorer I mark II and Dornblüth dress watch. Somehow I have a feeling the others are about to be neglected for the next few weeks.

I’m on my way to Switzerland to christen my new timepiece in waters at the source. Then back to London to see how it fares during a week of work.

There are a lot of threads on here stressing that you buy the seller before the watch and I’m here here to validate that it’s true even with ADs. There have been ADs who left me feeling cold, and who came across as no better than a snooty better-than-thou slime ball. Despite being with a huge chain, the AD I finally decided on treated me better than just a client. And it was that warmth that ultimately left me feeling ready to throw my credit cards on the counter.

Enough rambling... Time for a photo. More to come with the rest of the “family” once I get back from the travels.

Special thanks to all the enablers on here. Especially the other WG Daytona owners; you know who you are and now you know the influence/power of those daily wrist shots. ;-)

One of the best of the current line. Contrast and legibility is perfect. You do not even know its on the wrist. Enjoy.

This is a stunning model for sure, something I would buy except for the fact I can't pull off a Daytona on my wrist. Just looks too small.

Enjoy it!

This would be the best looking Daytona if it came with an Oyster bracelet, i'm not a fan of the rubber strap. I saw one in the display case at Harrods last year. I think the dial is superior to the white dial.

Congrats on an amazing watch! Would love to own that reference one day

Difficult for me to apprehend that we live in a world where on needs to be lucky to be allowed to buy a 30k watch. It's absolutely insane.

Beautiful watch and great story!

It would be awesome if Rolex sold that watch with a WG bracelet and the ability to fit an OF strap on it. But of course Rolex would never do that. Regardless, it's a gorgeous watch. Enjoy it!

Umm...your watch is fake. Just look at the subdial spacing in yours compared to the OPs.
