Do you take watch to AD even if it has B&P?

Newbie here! Fielding advice/opinions from the good people on TRF.

My question is: If you find a newer watch on the grey market, private seller (craigslist specifically for my case) with original box/papers/tag included, do you still bring to an AD or jeweler to authenticate?

Thanks for any and all help!

Of course. Recreating the paraphernalia is the easiest part of the con.

My advice, if you don’t know enough to authenticate the watch yourself, avoid buying from places like craigslist, at some point you will get your fingers burnt. Stick to trusted dealers.

Box, paper, receipts; they authenticate nothing. In fact, these are so easy to make, they also need authentication, just as much as the watch.

Thanks for the replies all! Really helpful.

Follow-up question:

If you want to authenticate the watch but it's located somewhere outside of the area where you have trusted jewelers/ADs, how do you decide which jeweler/AD to take the watch to (e.g. if you're out of state)? In my experience, some ADs and jewelers hardly know anything about the watches they sell and would surely not be able to authenticate 100% so it's hard to trust one that you haven't done business with before.

Thoughts?

In that case, get lots of high rez pics and post them here. Plenty of experts on hand to give their opinion. Even better if you can get a pic of the movement

I bought a watch from an individual I had bought a high end firearm from. Guy was super trustworthy, sent me the watch and told me to send the payment when I was satisfied with it.

I sold the watch to my nephew as it wasn't my taste (two tone sub). Fast forward about three years, he sold it to a TS here (locally). When he took it to them they told him watch was 100% GTG aside from the crystal being replaced at RSC.... but the box was fake.....

Weird,.... the guy I bought it from bought it brand new (local AD to him), papers, hang tags and booklet were all correct and original, but somehow ended up (over the years I guess) with a fake box.

Anyway, just thought I would share a story of a REAL watch with fake box.

That's an odd one for sure. Another example of paraphernalia being a bad indicator for authenticity.

Thanks to all for the advice!

I know of a £135k fraud. All the fake watches involved had boxes and papers - all matching too, one watch was even proven to be re-engraved. So to answer your question, yes. Especially if you're not 100% sure of what you're buying.

Do some research for ADs in the state you're purchasing from ahead of time. And post photos if you have them.

this !!

scammers will make sure to sort out on Ebay everything to make it look "full" B&P isnt really the marker to make something real...
now if everything is real, it is definitely a better deal to have a full set.
