Boxing: Schwarz vs. Fury

The fight takes place on the weekend. Will you look at that?

I’m a boxing fan and I watch most fights that come along, including PPV’s but I won’t watch this. Schwarz is a tomato can: he’s been handpicked to look like a credible opponent - he has a nice, pretty undefeated record - but scratch the surface and his opponents form the exact opposite of a murderers row: let’s call them a jaywalkers line-up. There isn’t a decent HW among them and their combined record is W306 L184 D14.

I get that Fury needs a tune-up before fighting Wilder and I get that the promoters don’t want to risk that mega-fight by handing Fury a dangerous live opponent. I don’t even mind hyping Schwarz up like he has a chance, when he doesn’t have much of one. But I do object to paying good money to see a world class operator fight a glorified exhibition against a no-name jobber.

We’ll find out soon enough. If your compatriot wins I’ll be back on here to eat humble pie.

one of my favourite heavyweights was larry holmes,

Now AJ has lost hopefully that will mean he will fight Fury and Wilder, these three make the HW division as interesting as it has been for decades, hope they all fight each other.

The Heavyweight division looks to be fairly competitive at the top, but I'm not impressed by the overall skill set of any of them. Gonne have to pass.

I have to agree, I was a fan of boxing some years ago; I don’t see the same skills as in days past. It appears that strength and size are more important than the basics.

Fury is a 30-1 favorite. As much as I wanted to be interested, not sure I'll watch this one.

You’re a medic, right? Maybe a neurosurgeon drumming up business? I don’t come across many doctors into boxing!

Ha! Right profession, wrong specialty

On a brief serious note: as far as the ethics goes - If two consenting adults who are aware of the risks get into the ring, then I have no issue. I disagree with the BMA on many issues, including this one.

The most brutal fight I ever saw was Nigel Benn vs. Gerald McClellan when I was about 15. You can watch it on YouTube and it’s pretty clear that the American suffered a severe brain injury in about round 2 or 3, after which he was oddly blinking the whole fight. If that doesn’t put you off the fight game, nothing could.

Well, I can’t say I disagree with your logic re two consenting adults. But, I’m sure you’re a minority in the profession.

For what it’s worth, I’ve certainly dissuaded my son from boxing and rugby!!!
