Tropical from Cuba Arrived
Always fun when you can place a watch at a specific place and time in history, and this 1005 is one of those. It was bought on October 7, 1962 at the Navy Exchange on Guantanamo Bay, just 10 days before the Cuban Missile Crisis.
The owner, a Master Chief in the Navy, wore in service for the next 20+ years. I would have to imagine that the conditions on a navy vessel played a critical role in developing the killer caramel to chocolate fade on the gilt dial. It comes with the original papers from 1962 and case back stickers, as well as RSC NYC service papers, booklet, and receipt--the Rolex wanted to replace the dial and hands, but the owner thank God did not. While tutone 34mm watches are not really my thing, my wife loves it and it is a cool addition to the collection with the provenance and dial. |

Fantastic, I see that the dial is more faded near the 3 o'clock side, from the 9 o'clock side being under a uniform shirt for two decades? Fantastic provenance.

That is a beautiful dial! My wife is Cuban and I'm on the search for a vintage Cuervo y Sobrinos marked watch. There are Rolex ones out there, but they tend to go at a premium.

Thanks to everyone. I am pretty stoked, and hoping to learn more about the original owner.

Awesome story man. I've been to Guantánamo Bay several times. Really awesome that a chief petty officer wore that watch through his career in the fleet. Thanks a lot for posting pictures and sharing the story.

A little more info in the original owner. He was the MCPO for VP-1 Screaming Eagles, so one can imagine his squadron was patrolling the waters before and during the missile crisis.
Trying to find out more... |
