I've seen the three white metals next to each other and I CAN tell the difference.
Since I don't care if somebody would mistake a white gold watch as SS, I would still get the precious metal in white for me. I would love a white gold Daytona, and would certainly appreciate the metal over stainless, though there isn't anything wrong with stainless. I want a SS sub hulk, but one should not consider that a white precious metal isn't worth buying because OTHERS might think its stainless and you wouldn't want them mistaking it for steel. Why would you care that they think its steel? |

Seriously folks, it's not hard to tell white gold from SS at all. Just took these pictures outside to demonstrate. There is a distinct color difference, and anyone who would continue to declare they're all the same must have some kind of vision problem.

I was looking in the ADs window at a GMTC and couldnt tell if it was the steel or YG, haha, so if theres a difference between WG and steel its pretty subtle.

Why in the world would anybody want to keep a "low profile" with regard to their Rolex watch?

Yes, agreed! But the layperson doesn't see things like white gold or platinum. Unless they see yellow, they assume it's stainless steel.

Basically, when you wear such a thing, you're wearing it for yourself: everyone who sees it is going to think it's stainless steel. But it's the satisfaction of knowing yourself that it's solid precious metal. It has to be.

Honestly I love the yellow gold, and enjoy TT models for the marriage of colors.
My dream would be a mint 19018, but that’s just not possible anymore. You may have mint 19019, and I’ve seen them. The white gold is beautiful, and perhaps you could achieve the same result with SS, but it just doesn’t exists. |

Some like platinum BECAUSE it doesn’t look valuable to others.

I think it's for the wearer as another person posted. You know what you have on your wrist, but not everyone else. Stealthy.

Platinum looks different to me, WG doesn't (at least the Rolex formulation). My mom's wedding set is platinum and there was always something about the look of that metal that struck me, even as a kid. Gold, even WG has a warmth to to it and Pt has a coolness to it. Can't quite put my finger on it.

White gold might have nickel in it too. I'm not sure what the Rolex 18k WG alloy contains, but I believe it is not rhodium plated like most WG. |

You either get it or you don’t. Not much point worrying, either way.

I don't like the color of gold for my personal watches and because of that I would never buy a YG of RG watch but a WG or PT watch would be a option for me if I wanted to spend that kind of money.

The choice between white PM against yellow or rose PM is also based on your environment and job. I would like the bold statement of a yellow gold DD, it isn't even out of reach with the 5 digit models, but being a common employee in Southern Italy, I believe it could be overpowered and attract dangerous attention here. So white gold could be wiser, but it's a pity that this would seem to most people nothing more a discreet DJ, to be optimistic.

I have both Stainless Steel and white gold Rolex.
The difference between White Gold and SS is so obvious that if you can't notice it I'm not sure why you'd even bother worrying about things like the quality of the movement. For someone else looking at you wearing it the difference is subtle in terms of luster, shine, color and the way the metal "pops" in light but when you wear the watch it's night and day. The way the white gold reflects light, the muted color but brilliant shine, the weight, the feel of the watch are all different no your wrist in ways that to me at least are not subtle. The downside to WG is the way it scratches and dents.....gotta be careful. The thing just pops though in a totally different way than SS does. |

After trying on a platinum and white gold DD's, I fell in love with the weight of those watches. Come right time, I'm definitely going to add a PM watch to my collection. Not sure which one it will be yet, maybe DD, maybe Platona, or maybe another brand in PM. But it's a feeling on your wrist like no other, and as much as I like my SS watches, having a PM one would be extra special. And I wouldn't care what people think, I would buy it for myself to wear and enjoy.
