Blue SkyDweller - future classic? or fad?

As the thread title says, would be interested to get your input on whether the SS blue SkyDweller will in the future be a classic - a watch worth keeping for life essentially?

On one hand, its got a terrific design, and one of the best dials from Rolex hands down.

On the other hand, it is pretty huge - its thickness especially.

What does everyone think?

I don't think it will be as "classic" as DD/DJ, Daytona or Sub/GMT, but it will be a sought-after piece for a long long time, the blue one.

I'm probably with the minority and will say it will not be a classic. I'm just not a fan of the watch. It doesn't sing to me.

I think it will always be coveted but will never be as “classic” as DD/DJ in terms of recognition by the general non-WIS and non-Rolex crowd.

Only time will tell. But, in my opinion, the DD/DJ will fall out of favor in time. It’s a watch I’ve primarily seen on older folks, while the younger are interested in sports models including those at Patek.

Classic? I don’t know. Scarce/Illusive yes. Which I think will add to its appeal. I know Padi will chime in and talk about how Rolex makes a million watches a year so no Rolex is rare but I’m just referring to it’s exclusivity. Thus adding to its appeal making it a “classic” hard to get piece.

I’d love to know how many stainless SkyDwellers they make for every Sub.

The sky-dweller is an amzing watch honestly, ive had them all near enough (Rolex) and the sky dweller is my favourite of all. it is big, but doesn't appear so as say the sea dweller. For people that like a flashy watch, this is the one in my opinion when it comes to steel watches at least.

I think if they made it 39mm x 10mm, it would be a huge seller. It's just too big for most people. But it could likley never be 10mm thick because of the advanced movement, which is why they probably went to 42mm in diameter. A 14mm thick X 39mm watch would look to top heavy. At least at 42mm x 14mm, it is proportional.

I really believe the royal blue will fade from favor with time. It's a pretty bright color and too much imho.

I think it's a good looking watch, but I couldn't get over the impression that it looks like a thick date just, so I sold it after a short time of ownership.

I think it’ll age extremely well and won’t be a fad. Watches are getting bigger and this one is big but not a giant. I don’t have a massive wrist and this fits very comfortably. I actually prefer the fit over the Sub/GMT case. I have the white dial and not the blue, but I think any of the three colors are great long term.

Future classic or fad? It will always have future value. From collectors standpoint, I think it is available in large numbers so it can't be considered unique or rare. Blue watch fad is probably responsible for the hyped pricing on the secondary market. Maybe it's a fad, but If you have ever seen one , it is a beauty. Also almost, but not quite, half of the steel Skydwellers for sale on the secondary market are blue dials. People selling to cash in on the fad. When the watch is discontinued from the catalog, a NOS piece unworn, with complete set and stickers on the watch will be more valuable than the others.

Not a classic but a very sought after and lovely piece. For me the black will be the one to have

It'll definitely age well, Rolex puts a lot of thought into their models and don't think it'll be one of those "one and done" things after a decade or so.

This is strictly a post 2016 mindset. Until demand rose to what its at now, the Datejust was significantly more popular than most of the SS models. Sheep who follow the Instagram herd will never find what they truly want, just want is "hot" or a "good investment".

Fad. I find them strange and pointless. On the level of a regatta timer for the YM2, but much more beautiful. Watch is stunning IMO, but the size is off and IMO, it’s doing too much.

I much prefer the white or black. I don’t think it’s just a fad, though I do not think it will become a classic. Somewhat sought after. But won’t be at the top of many lists especially with those less familiar with the Rolex brand.

The Skydweller is a niche model. Not many are sold relative to most other models because it’s big, it’s expensive, and just looks like an enhanced Datejust to most people. I think Rolex will keep making them as long as they sell enough but I would imagine lesser demand will continue.

I agree. I think it will be seen an eclectic and innovative project from Rolex, but not a classic nor highly sought after. I think “Rolex collectors” are the most enthusiastic about the model, I.e. people who specifically collect modern rolexes only and not other watches more broadly speaking.

I think it’s going to continue as a staple in The catalogue, however as others have mentioned - it doesn’t seem to have “classic” proportions. A 41mm ultra thin version though...

It’s a cultural change that’s been going on for decades. Younger successful people are less inclined to show off or flash their success like a solid yellow gold watch conveys. They appreciate the craftsmanship and look at the “tool” aspect of a diver or GMT. Some may go for PM, but as evidenced, the most in-demand models from the big houses are steel sports models. Those convey an active lifestyle, including the SkyD or GMT which convey a “travel-ready at any time” lifestyle.

I had to look when you wrote this post due to the “watches are getting bigger” statement but it wasn’t 2008 when DDII was launched but rather 5 years after they downsized the same.
