SS is the most PM for watches!
Hey TRF
I’m sure many have come a cross this lengthy article - it’s super interesting and reaffirmed my loyalty to SS watches - I’ve always been one. Given the numerous Rolex watch debates of SS vs PM, I’m curious as to your views on this, agree, disagree or has it changed your prospective on things? http://quillandpad.com/2018/02/10/he...metal-archive/ Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

I don't disagree with too much of the writer's arguments however he treads very lightly where it matters most - emotional response. Analytically, he's correct and SS makes a lot of sense. However PM elicits an emotional response from me that supersedes my head. That's why I buy these watches - not to tell time. I'd just use a Casio or iPhone if that was the case.

At least PM watches are just that precious, and desired and coveted, steel is just industrious and as desirable as coal or bricks, so they are not remotely comparable imho, and that's why I would argue the premium on an SS watch from its base materials is far greater than that of from SS to PM.

Agreed! Curious as to when you buy PM, do you go for WG or Platinum at all or go for he obvious PM looks of the YG or RG? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Very interesting and lots of good knowledge there. I like them all for one reason or another. Plat, as it is not commonly seen in the wild and I love the weight. WG, as it goes with everything. Not a real lover of the YG/RG, but that is because they are so bright and eyecatching they clash with most of what I tend to wear and sklin color.
Steel will always have a place in my heart as it is highly functional, less expensive and very durable. Actually better bang for the buck value. But I like plat because most dont notice it....because...I just like it. LOL I buy a PM because of how it feel. It's a reminder. BC it reminds me of my hard work, acheivements, my luck and good fortune, my blessings, how we had nothing when I was a child, all it took me to get where I am.

It's not a 'versus' thing. Each one has its own place in my collection.

Buying any Rolex in SS or PM is not rational, there are much more accurate watches on the market for a fraction of the costs.
All a matter of personal preference

The material is almost a secondary consideration for me. I have several of all PMs. I purchased a platinum Datograph because it made my pulse beat faster. I bought the platinum DDII because it was bad ass looking. I bought a white gold Sub because of the blue dial/bezel. The BLRO because I love GMT complications and the bezel colors were fun. YG Rolexes because they flash brilliantly in the sun. I WOULD buy a steel cased Patek Philippe Minute Repeater because steel is a better resonator than denser materials like gold or platinum - but I can't afford a million dollar watch (unless I leave my wife).

It's the same with cars... Plenty of high quality, solid as a rock cars out there, yet people still buy Ferarri, etc. Sri gets you from A too B.

I basically agree with the article, but I think each metal has its place. For sport watches, steel makes sense. For dress watches, a precious metal case adds a nice weight and old world significance to the watch, which, presumably, will be babied. For an everyday watch or for someone who wants the best bang for the buck or for someone who doesn't like the look of yellow or rose gold, I think steel is the way to go.

I won't be going whole hog with precious metals, but I'm sure glad I bought this 1503 in 14kt yellow gold.

The one area I’d disagree with that author is diving watch or general work at sea. 316 SS (and to much lesser degree, 904) will corrode over time with continual immersion in seawater.
Not the same for gold - even 14K gold. So less risk in midcase-to-caseback corrosion. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

I’d think the metals used to alloy .750 YG would be more susceptible than the metals used for .750 WG.
.950 Platinum has the least alloy in it so it gets my vote for he most noble metal for a watch case. Sent from my iPhoneX using Tapatalk

“Rolex exclusively uses 18 ct gold, a princely alloy composed of 750‰ (thousandths) of pure gold, plus exactly the right mixture of elements including silver and copper necessary to produce the different types of 18 ct gold: yellow, white and Everose...”
Copper in a dive watch isn’t such a great idea. Still, I’ve never noticed any ill effects from diving with my gold watches. |

Mike I think you have a WG Sub, right? White gold is alloyed with white metals (normally palladium, manganese or nickel) a YG alloy would have copper.
I think Rolex’s Statement is very generic to the metals they alloy. I’m guessing their proprietary blend is highly protected. Sent from my iPhoneX using Tapatalk

I think it’s a taste and preference rather than what’s “better”

It’s the way it makes ME feel, the weight, the specific dials to some models, etc... And yes, each metal has a time and place, at least for my purposes. |

I bought PM because of the feel. From PM i chose platinum because of it’s special attribute of not losing metal when ’scratched’. In human lifetime scale platinum Rolex is eternal.

SS is the most PM for watches!
It’s a saying (at least here in canada), in the sense where if someone brings luck, you say “rub that luck onto someone else”. It is rather a compliment actually. In the context of my response, his wife was tolerant to all his PM purchases - my wife would ask me which SS watch I’m selling if I say I want to buy a new one :).
