Switching between the different settings on caliber 3135 vs. caliber 3186

I have had several Rolex watches in the past, and when operating the ones with caliber 3135 vs. the ones with caliber 3186, I noticed that pulling out the stem on caliber 3186 watches to access the various settings always felt a bit 'undefined'. It's hard to describe but while it is easy for me to set the time/date on a Submariner, doing the same on a GMT Master II turned out to be somewhat more complicated because the various stages don't feel very distinct to me. You could call the feel of the 3186 a bit 'spongy' or imprecise. Anybody else have the same experience? Is this inherent in the movement design differences or is my 3186 acting up?

The mechanism for the stem is identical. I too have noticed that some click more defined than others, even when equal amounts of lubrication is applied during servicing.
