I would forget about "mass appeal", or what rappers wear or don't wear. Just buy what you love, who the heck cares about anything else? Sure many people myself included prefer the days when these sports Patek watches were less recognizable, less sought after, but ultimately anything that is beautiful, that has a historical significance, and that is made from a world class brand will be sought after. Be it cars, watches, or otherwise. I promise you noones going to think you're a rapper if you wear a Nautilus. If you love it, buy and wear it. If you don't, then don't! |

Want me to spell it out so you can understand? If a purchaser of any given product from Brand X desires that product based on discretion and flying under the radar, then seeing the product being worn by the types of celebrity that flaunt conspicuous consumption, means the appeal is gone. GONE. Need that elaborated further to understand? You may need to go back to school. More generally, Brands nurture their image incredibly carefully to align themselves with their target demographic. Nike don’t sponsor George Clooney and Brioni don’t work with Lil Wayne. But seeing as Patek sports models have become suddenly the de facto watch ffor signalling status, the brand alignment has gone out of the window. It’s fine for SoCal/Miami fan boys. For the people that got into the brand for it’s beautiful discretion, it’s a travesty. It’s revolting. |

Yeah I sold my APRO for a similar reason. I don't like the connotations.
Very happy with Lange and will likely stick with them plus a few independents. |

Agree, I still own my Patek SS watches, but I have now "downgraded" to a Vacheron Overseas dual time gen 3 which I can wear without worrying about the loss of residuals on a 50K + watch.

I would feel pretty confident about myself if I had bought something before it became popular and a few years later it became hyped up by celebs. Must have been how John Mayer felt finding those sleeper hits |

That is me also. I discovered Patek backpacking through Europe after undergrad in 1991. I was chasing Rolex at the time (and ended up with. 16200) but fell in love with moon phase Pateks in Zurich. Could not afford them at the time. Still on the hunt for the right one... It blows me away that demand is so high for steel Pateks where perpetual or perpetual chronos see at a discount on the grey market. So much more bang for buck if nothing else. |

Personally, I don't care what someone else wears and it doesn't affect my purchase decisions. Also I don't seek to influence anyone else's.
I love the Nautilus and Aquanaut because of their quality, appearance, history and wearability. And I will continue to do so. I also believe that if a rapper or other public figure wears a Patek and has earned the money to do -- more power to him or her, whether or not I appreciate their performance art. |

I don’t think it’s that surprising ... dress/style becoming more causal, average buyer becoming younger (I think) and “sports” watch styles are “in”. Some people who own a SS Patek would never wear an AC or PP “dressy” strap watch bc it’s just not their style. I do agree w you that clearly in present times non-SS Pateks are a better “value” (msrp vs grey market price for a SS), but a lot of people , myself included , are not driven by $$ when collecting. I’m certain that Patek Philippe ADs and boutiques allocate more watches for purchase to wealthy celebrity entertainers than to obsessive watch idiot savants who spend too much time on the Internet. I’m also certain that then someone who has mastered their craft well enough to the extent where the cost of these watches is peanuts sees joe public wearing their watch, they don’t scoff and voice their discontent in the way that has been expressed by you. |

Who care if a rapper owns it? they also own benzes, vacation on beaches, and fly private. They have iphones and they like cool music. Dont get why it is a turn off. Seems it would be worse if certain other professions owned them. would be far worse if poliicians wore them, wouldnt it.

I don’t believe in coincidences and I know that rappers have been paid handsomely for product placement in their music on a number of occasions. To think that PP has no hand in this mania is very though to believe especially when we already know AP paid Hov.

Patek Sport is Played Out
I've never met anyone who didn't like that their watch doubled or tripled in value. They may bemoan the fact that they feel less comfortable wearing it due to their value but cry me a river - that is a good problem to have.
To me, I feel more comfortable wearing a STEEL Nautilus than pretty much any modern Rolex; especially if I don't want to be noticed - even more comfortable with the 5167A. I have genuinely never had anyone stare at my Nautilus except at WIS meet ups as well as when I was in Japan. As for a royal oak, if you wear the 36mm one it does fly under the radar abit more. The Nautilus is an iconic design and I believe that most collectors with the means to own one will want one. However I would argue the Patek Worldtime with the enamel is even more recognizable. In fact, I would say the Worldtime is both eye catching, iconic, and breathtakingly beautiful. Anyway, I think this thread needs more pictures, I will post a few of mine. I enjoy them all. The bottom line is we all have parts of ourselves and watches reflect that. There are times we want to be noticed and times we don’t want to be noticed. I daresay most of the people that want to be noticed are either in PM Rolex or in RM. Patek is in the middle. Anyway stop overthinking and just enjoy - life is short. |

Somebody who indulges in “Conspicuous consumption”, buying a Patek would put you off buying the Patek? I really enjoy watches. It is a passion, an interest, a hobby, a whatever.. but it makes me happy and provides me with pleasure. But I am under no illusion whatsoever that when young children can’t afford to be fed, spending 20k+ on a watch is the very definition of “conspicuous consumption”! I think there is a huge irony in your comment, along with a snobbishness that is quite vulgar. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

This thread takes whining to a new level in here.
Because the brand has garnered recognition based on being high quality? Because some groups have adopted it as a sign of wealth? Smh. Oy vey. Oh and hey, I work out. I have tattoos. And I have a Huracan. I must be IG famous.

I was the one who started the thread. My purpose was really just to vent a bit and express my reasons for selling my Patek sport watch. Sure it’s a nice watch, but living in NY it was just starting to feel a little obnoxious. Lot of show offs with money jumping at these begging to be seen. If it doesn’t ruin some of the fun for you then fine with me. For me it’s a bit played out where I live and that’s my view and my choice to have that view. Like what you like and dislike what you dislike, for your own personal reasons. I just prefer the way it was before when they were really cool and under the radar. Now they are really cool and the opposite of under the radar. Doesn’t speak to me anymore. Again, personal choice. If you like them I’m not saying anything negative or being critical in any way. I wish I could not care and just enjoy the watch. But nowadays there are so many nice choices to choose from that ARE under the radar, at least according to my definition which may not be yours, so I’m just as happy without.
For what it’s worth I think everyone should be entitled to their own views, especially when it comes to hobbies like this. People shouldn’t get defensive and aggressive just because someone says something they personally don’t agree with. |

This really is it! I can’t get my head around this thread. Firstly, I wear watches that I like. I’ve hardly been out in 8 months and yet I still switch my watches every day, I wear them for me, not for others. Secondly, who cares about Instagram folk and celebrity, is their money any less valid than money made by lawyers and bankers? Are they not entitled to have nice stuff? Given many come from difficult backgrounds, is it a surprise that they want to show off their wealth, to show how far they’ve come? I’ve no issue with it. And finally, people saying that they now feel uncomfortable wearing their watch because it’s doubled in value. That blows my mind! I can’t see any difference between wearing a £20k watch vs a £40k watch vs a £80k watch. They all make you a target, can’t imagine anyone deciding not to mug you because your watch is only worth £20k! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
