What is this sunburst dial on the Submariner?
Hey all...
I'm a new member and I'm happy to be part of this great community. I am looking into a used 2 tone submariner / blue dial. Some listings mention that their watch has the newer sunburst dial. What is the difference compared the older ones? Are we talking about color itself? reflection? I wasn't able to find a comparison between the sunburst and older look. Thank you. |

There are a few models of this watch:
Older 16613 which had a blue sunburst dial but old case, clasp, bracelet etc. This model has been discontinued for several years. Then Rolex released the 116613 with a "powder" blue dial which is NOT sunburst but has the upgraded case, clasp, maxi dial etc Rolex recently discontinued the "powder" blue and re introduced the sunburst to the current 116613 The difference between the powder blue 116613 and the sunburst blue 116613 is simply the dial, MAYBE bezel color, I am not certain. Other than that there are no differences to the watch. The powder blue is flat...sunburst really pops and is a deeper either color. |

This is the powder blue. Im not sure all the powder blue dials have been discontinued, I know the diamond one has for sure. The sunburst is still not available with diamonds, not sure this will happen, will have to wait and see. Then I have a tough decision weather to stay with the flat powder dial, or go sunburst if it comes out with the diamonds of cause.
Also see this thread. Hope it helps. http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=379347 Last edited by AdamRobbo; 18 November 2014 at 06:11 PM.. Reason: Updated more details |

All the so called names for the blue dial 16613 or 116613 are just tiny changes to the blue pigment paint on the dial nothing more.

I see! Good to know!
I did pay attention to the upgraded clasp which has gold unlike the older one which comes in silver. Whats difficult about this is that they all look the same! I am shocked sometimes when i'm looking at a listing and then discover the watch is about 8 years old! I'm looking for a recent model and its not easy to identify. I have a list of codes which identify the year of make but I only have them until 2008. |

I have a green sunburst. To me, it looks dark, almost black, in poorly lit areas. In bright light it has this corruscating brilliance that is hard to explain. In normal light, like in a room, it looks just a tad darker than the bezel. This is my perception, YMMV.

I'm actually looking around for a blue sub, probably will end up with a 16613 due to my budget but I have had the flat blue 116613 on and the 116613 sunburst and they both are great. I wish the budget was more but I will be happy with a 16613.
Here is the flat 116613. The photo may look like sunburst but it def was flat blue.

Beautiful pic Adam, the diamond hour markers really make the dial stand out!
