Date or no date sub?
Hey all;
Obviously new to the forum here but been on watches for a few years now, and I feel I have finally hit my groove. I know the size/shape/look of the watches I want now. This collection will take me years and years to get, but I hope it’ll look something like what’s below. I think I’m going to go with a 4 watch collection: Exp 214270 MK2 (own) GMT BLNR 126710 (next purchase) Black Sub (date or no date?) Dress watch (prob a Lange moonphase) So I have a question: did you get a date or no date sub, and why did you choose one over the other? Aesthetics? Collection compliment? Etc. I really appreciate the feedback, but the “get what you want, don’t worry about anyone else’s opinion” posts can be inferred in this situation My split thinking: get the date, because it’s a good complication to have, and I rather enjoy the cyclops. The other side: I LOVE my 214270 mk2 for its simplicity, so there’s the monkey wrench. If I go with the date, that will be 3 watches with date, and my GADA without. Thanks for the feedback! I’m just a humble watch nerd that loves to talk watches Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Don't over think things.
It's your collection and should contain your choices. Personally, I have both.

In your situation I would pick the no date, as it is unlikely your daily watch, which the date function is indeed very useful.

As others have said, it's mostly personal preference.
I chose date because when I was younger, I was a working dive instructor. We were in and out of the water and had to fill out boat logs, water conditions logs and logs for our clients. We had no easy reference to the date. No smart phones (nor very few cell phone in general). No cell service. When you work on a dive boat, you really forget what day it is. Haha. Also did marine research where we needed to record the date at various points in time. So again, easy access to the date was super helpful. As you can see, all case by case. Good luck either way. Have fun! |

I have a Sub and a Bluesy, so both bases covered. I am pretty into having the date as I noticed as my collecting progressed.

Get the Date or you will regret it.
Most people buy the No Date Sub to save money but will not admit it. |

Date. Owned both. Never fully enjoyed the 114060. Traded up to 116610 and couldn’t be happier. Oddly enough for 5 digit, I do like the 14060 better. However, once you own a 6dig, it is hard to get a 5 dig. Feels like a huge downgrade (even though it is 100% not), just feels cheaper.

Lol! To save money. If someone was buying an $8000 watch I don’t think $1000 will make or break you. Do people buy 36 instead of 41 datejust to save money? I have had many watches, including my current 114060 and datejust 41 that is $10k. On a waitlist for ceramic Daytona. $ was 100% not a factor. I also plan to get the Batman as I grow my collection further. If I have one sub in my collection, I want one without the date. After I wear my datejust and put on the 114060, there is really something special about the clean dial. I have had more complements from watch collectors about the 114060 because I could have gotten either, but went with the no date.

I think you already have a "no date" watch in the Explorer I.
In your position I would opt for the Submariner Date, but I would get an older reference to give your collection a little... if you'd pardon my pun... depth.

To me, the date gives it a little extra something. When the date is an option, get it.

The Explorer is your clean, no fuss watch. I'd go full functionality on the Sub and get the date (that's what I did). Plus, you like the Cyclops.

I have SubC-date...
I would not change it. It looks "naked" without date/cyclops, but I know I will be in the minority in this opinion |

Wow, this forum is wayyyyy more active than WUS lol. Thank you all for your opinions and insight!! daonlyBG, I have thought about that. If I go vintage, I’ve already got one in mind but that purchase will be after the above watches are picked up, if ever. My “grail” will be nigh unattainable though, unfortunately. And oddly enough, the date wheel is a big reason I want it haha. Seems like the majority prefer the no date sub. Interesting. I do love dial simplicity, as I will most likely never own a chronograph or the like; they are useless in my opinion. Just not my cup of tea. Thanks for the replies! I love reading others’ insight on piece acquisition. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

It really is a tough call, I get both sides. I always go back to if I had one Rolex, I would get the one with the date. But I have both the datejust and sub, so for me it is a nice change up without the date. My datejust 41, while wears smaller than the sub, has a larger dial than the 114060 because of the bezel size. The larger dial on the datejust 41 allows for the cyclops to breathe and doesn’t crowd the dial. That is why I like the 41 over 36 as the cyclops looks to big in my opinion on the 36. I think that is why many people think the 114060 has such a clean dial.
