To polish or not to polish - Gold 1803
Hi all, was recently gifted my late grandpa's 18k gold 1803 , however i do note quite a lot of scratches along side the case and on the crown side of the case.
would you recommend light polishing with cape cope or to leave as is? |

Definitely don’t do it yourself. Some people will tell you never to polish but I think the key is to avoid overpolishing or polishing errors (doing it yourself). Personally I’d probably leave it be but a Rolex service center could make it look like new again if that’s what you want

there is nothing wrong with a light polish if u want the surface to look a little cleaner. Cap code clothe takes very little metal off so just do it slowly and see if you like the results.

Photos would be needed to provide useful feedback.

I would have that polished, obviously a light polish by a professional, can't understand all this scratches being character etc that's always said on the forum, I understand if polished too often and too hard the problems that arise but you can have it done infrequently, who has a nice classic car and thinks scratches and dents should be lived with!

Hmmm. 18K gold is soft. I'd expect most of those dings to be back soon, if you wear it.
For that reason, I'd leave it. |

I personally would not, the scratches don't look bad at all and they are family scratches.

You can carefully polish away those hairlines by hand without affecting the shape of the case. However, other hairlines will most likely appear with time.

That baby looks like it has never seen the polishing wheel. Fat lugs and original finishing.
I would keep it as it is....

Yes I do agree that I notice the case is still quite thick. From all your advices here, looks like I will be leaving this as is and not even attempt to polish it with cape cod. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I wouldn't polish it. If you did, and you wear the watch much at all, it will look the same as it does now within very little time.

Don't do it, you'll just ding that gold again.
I think it looks great as it is and, those dings were put there by your Grandpa! |

It looks great. Believe or not that is only a few months of wear on a gold case. It will look like that again and your edges will be ruined.

Listen to the majority here and do not polish. It appears to have the original finish which not only looks better than a polished piece and is much more valuable. Once polished it can never go back and those minor marks only make it easier to wear without worrying too much.

I'd polish it, make it look like new again, I dislike "patina" "scratches" and so on. It's not a rare piece.
You obviously are annoyed by the scratches, fix it. I doubt you're going to sell it so make it to your liking.

its in a nice used condition, consider a gold jewelry cleaning cloth and just give it a wipe over, enjoy it its nice looking watch you have there,

For god's sake, don't try to remove the scratches yourself. If you really want it polished, get a pro to do it.
Personally I'd leave it as it is. Even if you have it polished professionally, it will scratch up again after a few months of use. It's just everyday wear on relatively soft yellow gold. Wear it as grandpa did. |

Can a cape cod cloth really damage edges and bevels? I thought they were just metal cleaning cloths?
