Would you buy a backup?
For me as a collector, I see these timepieces as wearable kinetic sculptures. It's a wonderful thing to have a particular piece on the wrist and enjoy it 'on the go'. Would anyone here ever buy a 'back up' piece? One to wear with abandon, and one to appreciate in it's perfect unworn state?

If only we have crystal ball to know what’s going to happen in the future!
Which model will appreciate or keep the current hype would be largely based on speculation I don’t do backup models but would understand why someone might

I get what you’re saying. And i have done it with other things other than watches. If I loved the watch that much and I could afford to then I would. It’s a strange sort of obsessive compulsive obsession that I don’t think many will understand lol but I totally get you

Good luck with that if you want the 5711...impossible to get ONE...let alone TWO! Will be a miracle if your AD decides to sell two to you. Maybe by the time you get the second one, it will be your grandchildren buying it..
So no point except to wear what you have and enjoy!! |

I would have used the money to buy another watch to wear. This way I will have 2 watches and double the fun.

The motto of collectables is: you actually buy 3. One to wear, one to put away and one to sell.

Would you buy a backup?
I get what you’re saying. Not going to lie the thought has crossed my mind. But I haven’t actually done it. I wear everything I own and ultimately I’ve come to peace with the fact that they won’t be perfect but they will be loved.

Not on mass-produced pieces like the PP. Maybe not wear a truly historic / museum piece, yet that's about it imho. All other PPs should be worn as they are not rare / important or anything like that. Though yes, you may want to have a nice backup to wear when your PP is in service for months and months. That's why there's Rolex, F.P. Journe, Panerai, OMEGA, Cartier... and even Bvlgari is giving PP a run for their money at 1/3rd the price.

No, when I started in this hobby I heard of people buying and wearing fakes so the real ones sat safely in a safe at home, not sure I ever found many people actually doing this.

I try to do this as often as I can. I buy at multiple AD, so I often get pieces I really like twice. One I wear, one goes into the safe.

As a watch guy it’s kind of odd but as a collector it’s quite normal. Whatever makes you happy.

Not in the UK, they monitor multiple AD applications to stop this unless you are buying from window stock - which they absolutely should do to stop multiple purchases of the same piece and thereby preventing others having the chance to own popular pieces.

So you risk getting mugged for a fake watch. If one has concern (and I do appreciate and understand. that) wear a real cheaper brand watch rather than a fake... Now I have heard of folks keeping a watch winder with a fake in plain site in case of home burglary.

Life is short. Unless museums are calling you about purchasing your collection it should be your goal to use, abuse, and enjoy them.

I can understand they can monitor application pieces like 5231J but not all the popular pieces. |

Thanks, does it mean ADs need to submit the names of the clients on the list for pieces such as 5711/5712?

I brought this up more of a curiosity- for me, the only watch I'd 'back up' is the 5968A! That is probably my favorite in the entire PP line up.

I'm pretty OCD, so I will admit to either A) using a different color dial as the backup, e.g. white/black daytona, or B) if the watch is uber expensive, I'll have 'backup' bracelets that really just stay in the safe to scratch the mental itch knowing the condition is perfect and continue to wear the watch with abandon without ever really using that backup bracelet.
