Hi, I've recently been bitten by the Panerai bug and looking to make a purchase in the new year.

As I have a 6.3 inch wrist, my options seem fairly limited as I don't want anything that looks / wears too big.

I've tried on the luminor quaranta and radiomir quaranta. I've also tried on the 42mm luminor due and the radiomir 574/512. Out of all those models, the 574 /512 wore the best but because they are manual wind and have a screw in crown, I'm concerned about the wear to the thread from having to wind the watch every couple of days. It's also an old model that is no longer available new at retail.

The luminor quaranta seems to tick a number of boxes, including water resistance, but is quite thick and I'm not a fan of the large buckle. The proportions of it also don't seem quite right.

The radiomir quaranta wore well but felt perhaps a bit too small for a panerai and only has 30m of water resistance.

The luminor due 42mm also wore well and is nice and thin but the 30m water resistance bothers me.

I'd be grateful for any other suggestions. Thanks in advance.

I recommend this PAM 574 42 mm of mine.
It wears well because it has a flat caseback and is only 11.20 mm thick.
It is so versatile that it can become your GADA watch.

I agree the 574 has the ideal dimensions, water resistance etc. How do you find having to unscrew and wind it every couple of days? Is there much wear on the crown thread?

It is an automatic watch, if he wears it everyday he won't have to unscrew the crown to wind it. But if it bothers you that much, get a Luminor instead. Less wear and tear on the gaskets with the crown guard lever push system.

I have a 7 inch flat shaped wrist and 44mm Luminor is my limit personnally. If I were in your shoes, I would try either a 42mm Radiomir wire lugs or 40mm Luminor, I bet these models would fit you very well.

OP-
Your wrist is def on the smaller side, but I wouldn’t necessarily rule out the 44mm Luminors or the 45 Radiomirs.
Some can wear smaller than you would expect.

There’s also the 42mm Submersibles that would work as well.

Good
Luck!

Unfortunately the 574 is manual wind, hence my concern re wearing out the thread by having to regularly wind the watch.

I'm not sure why, but the proportions of the 40mm Luminor seem a bit off to me. I'll look out for some 42mm Radiomir, although I'm not aware that there are any...?

I have never had a problem in 7 years.
The threads are solid and resistant.

Thanks, that's really good to know. On that basis I might start looking out for a 574. They're not that easy to come by.

You are right, I had the 572 in my mind which is automatic with a micro rotor movement. A think watch but it is a 45mm solid lugs radiomir so it may be a bit much for you.

There are some 42mm radiomir such as the PAM00337 but indeed they can be quite rare to find. And if 40mm luminor look off to you, you should try to shop for 42mm luminor or even submersibles. There are certainly more options in that size. Good luck with the hunt!

They are not easy to find but if you seek you will find.
The model is from 2015, not too far away, so you may also find new ones, ones that have never been worn or in excellent condition.

You should try on some 45mm radiomirs which wear much smaller due to the wire lugs
