That was crazy. You rarely see a car explode like that in a crash.

Says a lot about the safety of the current cars. Not until very recently is somebody walking away from a crash like that. I'm guessing the halo helped a lot too as he punched right through the barrier.

My sentiments exactly. That was a really horrific looking crash. It’s unbelievable to see someone walk away from something like that with minor injuries. Much less be able to free themselves in the midst of all this. Granted he really had to to survive, but really unbelievable. I haven’t seen a crash that bad in F1 for a long time.

I know we complain about some of the restrictions in the sport, but really thankful safety has come as far as it has in the sport.

We've seen what happens without the halo. It definitely saved Romain

Very interesting race on many fronts. Thank goodness for Halo as it did save him from decapitation.

Felt reeeeally bad as three laps to go and.... boom goes the engine. Damn :(

Halo indeed.
A miracle.

Not sure his Nomex? gloves performed as well as he would of liked.
The portable extinguishers, yet again, shown to be inadequate in this scenario.
Bravo the marshall and Doc', incredible bravery to walk towards that inferno!

Poor Lewis. I wish him well.

He already locked in the 2020 WC (and Constructors), so no worries there

I hope they give it to George Russel to pit him against Bottas then loan a Merc driver to Williams.

Think it’ll go to Stoffle though.

Well . . . at least we know who won't win on Sunday. I do feel for him a bit. 265 consecutive starts is impressive.

Wouldn’t it be something if who ever subs in that car ends up winning the race! Imagine the amount of fans who would feel vindicated that it’s all car that has one all those championships and not Lewis. All the drama would be outrageous

The Official Formula One Thread!

Vandoorne is currently in Spain testing for the Formula E team. He flies to arrive in Bahrain tomorrow.

Russell is managed by Mercedes, but contracted to Williams, they would have to agree + promote a reserve driver of their own.

It’s possible that an agreement would be reached to release him. That would put the following 4 Williams reserve/testing drivers into the mix: Jack Aitken, Roy Nissany, Dan Ticktum or Jamie Chadwick.

Too messy methinks - I expect to see Vandoorne in the car. Also HAM may miss Abu Dhabi so could be 2 starts for Vandoorne. Bahrain requires 10 days in isolation and Abu Dhabi requires HAM to return negative results earlier than FP1 for entry. Just a mess for Toto.

Totally agree. While nobody wishes for an accident like this, f1 will get some incredible data from this accident on how critical the halo and safety equipment is. I also don’t think the safety crew was all that well prepared. It’s seemed like the crew member with the fire extinguisher was having a hard time. Not sure why the pins are not pulled on the extinguishers before the race starts. It’s an absurd step to need to take, pulling the pins with gloves on can be an issue. I imagine some changes will be made for safety. I had no idea the safety car did anything outside of starting the race and pacing cars, those guys are really impressive.

Yep, and Williams reserve Jack Aitken will replace Russell at Williams. Gonna be an interesting weekend in Bahrain. And maybe the following weekend in Abu Dhabi as well.

Hadn’t seen that yet. Good for Russell and for Aitken. Both deserve the starts.

I didn’t think that would be worked out due to the shuffling required.

Sorry for the reserve driver who landed from Spain only to be told “stand down”.

Agree - the corner workers are told to keep the pins in until responding. The truth is more fire bottles are discharged by inadvertent handling than in fighting fires. This is due to stumbles, falls and overturned bottles. We have advocated for a double trigger safety like you see on Glock’s. The pins mean the bottle is never ready - the trigger would keep inadvertent discharges from happening but automatically disengage once the handle is pulled.

The Medical Car you saw is different than pace or safety cars that are used to pace the field formation lap or the restarts. It always follows standing starts for the first lap. The doctor who helped the corner worker with the fire bottle was most brave as he ran into the flames to grab Grosjean when he leaped over the barrier.
