Can’t Decide Whether To Pull The Trigger!

Hi friends. My wife graduates medical school in May and wants a DJ 31 with black dial and diamond markers. This configuration goes for $9,400 plus tax (~8% in CA) in our local AD in the US. We’re in Europe right now and found the same model at an AD for ~$8000 after VAT refund and estimated 3% US import duty tax. We can’t decide if we should do it or not. It’s cheaper than in the US but she also won’t wear the watch until May so we’d be paying 2 months in advance. There’s also a little more peace of mind getting it from a local Saad in the US in case there’s a problem and to get the US warranty instead of the international one. We weren’t planning on dropping this much money on the trip but we’d have to spend it anyways in the future. What would y’all do?

Well seeing as DavidSW sells the same watch for 7975 USD if you really have to get it with american warranty card you can just get it from him for same money. On the other hand, European warranty should work just fine. They will still repair it if something happens, so I say go buy now and enjoy it, wear it before May.

Thanks. I just saw it on his website.

I’d wait and work on the price in the US. Congrats to your wife, by the way! Mine is a physician also and it’s a great profession!

You just have to check the Rolex Ladies and the set the size to 31. I am not sure I can post the link here if there are rules prohibiting it, but I can definitely PM you the link.

When in doubt, don't. There are plenty of DJ31's in the market and I trust DavidSW much more then an AD in another county if I had an issue. Congratulations on your wife's pending graduation.

AD cases in the US are LOADED with DJs, so you should be able to negotiate for a better price than what you are seeing in Europe!

I’ll be the outlier here ...

If you’re in Europe, make the memory even more special and buy the watch there. Much more special than ordering it on line and having it shipped me thinks YMMV

Agreed. Much cooler story about where it came from.

I agree it'll make a nice experience and story if you choose to get it now.

At the same time OP, don't be discouraged that you won't get that same 15% off here in the states, you will

I don't see what difference a couple of months makes. It's there, you're there, you can't do better on price (probably) and like others said, you'll have a story behind it to always remember.

This is a great point and now I'm convinced that buying it abroad is the right call! The story will greatly outweigh a couple hundred bucks in potential savings, which 20 years from now will be inconsequential.

Also, let her wear it while on vacation and then snatch it back when you get home. It will drive her crazy to not be able to wear it and you will magically have incredible bargaining power for something you've been wanting. (Cue evil laugh and hand wringing)

I would wait and buy local. This is an easy and great way to start building a relationship with your local AD.

The guarantee is international, so thats not an issue. Buying in europe is a great story and memory, I'd certainly do it!

Excellent idea. As long as you are the original owner and have the Bill Of Sale, not even the NYC RSC can deny you warranty service.

I'd buy it in Europe. Even if you might get a better deal here in the US, it's the experience of a lifetime.

So pull that trigger.

Doesn't matter where you get it, get it from an AD. You can probably negotiate a better price even in AD for DJ in the US than the MSRP.

Agreed. And it is the watch she wants, you have it in hand to celebrate a life event. I would go for it. In a year, the two month carrying cost won't matter and you will have a memory. Good luck!
