One watch - sub date and move on. Consider this coming from someone that had a sub with no date, a sub with date, and a datejust. Black sub SS date does the trick. Get a new one.

My choice would be a Sub Date. It’s a classic as well as rugged and practical. I wore a Sub 16610 as my only watch for 20 years before I started expanding my collection.

Good advice here.

Which Rolex makes you salivate when you see photos of it? That’s the one for you.

By the way, I fully endorse your life simplification. Well done!

I would keep my yellow gold Daytona. I can wear this watch more than anything else. It feels amazing. The only negatives I can think of is that it’s not good to wear a gold watch in a sketchy, dangerous environment and I don’t like wearing sporty watches with suits.

My recommendation would be one of the following:

1.) 36mm DateJust, Blue dial with stick hour markers on super-Jubilee bracelet.

Can be worn with jeans or a suit and always look good.

2.) 5 digit black Submariner with holes case.

Wear it on a Nato, black rubber, or distressed when dressed down, oyster bracelet when wearing a suit. Or to keep things simple, like you stated and stay with the original oyster bracelet.

OP, you should get the modern version of the reference your grandfather wore, since part of this is keeping a connection to him.

What did he wear?

You aren't missing anything. Rolex only has a couple of models and that's it.

Vintage vs Modern
36mm vs 40mm (or bigger but I doubt it)
Steel vs Gold/Platinum
Oyster vs Jubilee bracelet (or presidet/rubber)

Pretty much any Rolex will last you a lifetime.

To simplify things further, Rolex basically has two watches, Classic and Professional. DJ, DD, OP, SkyD, etc, probably look the same to the common person. Same goes for Sub, GMT, Daytona, Explorer. Pick any one that you like and fits in your lifestyle and budget.

Good luck!

The Datejust , it is appropriate with anything from shorts and a t-shirt to a suit and tie.

If you grandfather wore a DD, that’s the one it should be! One of the first comments was to get a WG DD. A homage to your gran, will last your lifetime and is beautiful!

I second the sub date (16610) is pretty much a bullet proof 'only watch'.
