I think that many buy for others, the image, the so-called status !
Personally, they pity me more than envy.

We can be extremely rich with any clothes and a watch costing only 1000$ ... nothing apparent can make the man.

I totally agree and so bespoke all the way for me.

Haha when you think you've seen it all... the OP on an attractive lady was more appealing than a Daytona on a short man... wtf? I guess I cant eat donuts in my 5711 anymore either for fear of someone seeing me. Odd thread to say the least. Like saying a supermodel in a BMW 3 series convertible looked better than a middle aged bald man in a Ferrari 488 Spyder....

Zing! Surely, this seems like a fine topic for a Tuesday morning.

A watch can indeed make the man... at least that's what Vincero asserts!

meh, let these people live. if they want to wear 1 PM watch on each wrist who cares as long as it makes them happy and they're not doing harm to anybody.

Can't even innocently wear a specialty watch these days without getting judged for "trying too hard/showing off"

It seems like other men wearing nice watches makes the OP feel insecure.

I hate to say it but where I live, way up in the north woods...nobody would even notice if you wore twin presidents for the most part. Some clown did say nice submariner though when I was out last week at the gun club in my sd43

In life though I’ve found that two types people generally notice your watch. The first are watch guys...which are rare. The second are egotistical a holes wanting to judge you.

Q1 is that a Rolex? Q2 is it real? Q3 how much did it cost?

I notice everybody’s watch...because I like watches. I never comment on them though to the owners unless it’s something crazy like a old snowflake Tudor or the like

I hear what the OP is saying, but I am of the belief that you should wear whatever makes you happy. It's your funeral, so to speak.

I’m inclined to agree with this sentiment. When I finally had the means, I went out and bought a Rolex. I’d always admired them. I loved that watch and eventually added three more Rolex models to my collection along with pieces from other brands. It wasn’t until years later, after I settled into the hobby and began naturally gravitating towards watches from other brands (FP Journe & Patek) that I began to realize that the Rolex “look” didn’t perfectly suit my sense of style or my personality. So eventually I ended up selling my Rolexes because I wasn’t wearing them, though I still enjoyed looking at them. But I didn’t want to become a museum curator.

For me, it took developing the ability to honestly assess myself and what was best for me. I believe everyone is on some part of that very personal journey. (Just read Jorge’s legendary thread.) It’s not for me or anyone else to judge. I still love to see a Rolex on someone’s wrist, or a Speedmaster, or whatever. I never make assumptions other than the fact that they’re a fellow watch lover, something that I celebrate.

Nowadays I wear mostly very discreet watches that go unnoticed. But they’re watches that give me immense pleasure to wear. I’ve found I much prefer to have a little secret under my cuff rather than the instantly recognizable cyclops eye, innumerated bezel, or jubilee bracelet.

But that’s just me and my journey. To each his own.

If we’re talking aesthetics and not hype or “brand” ... I think watches are a lot like clothing. A well-tailored/fitted garment at any price point will always look better than a very expensive maison-branded piece of clothing that doesn’t fit.

The OP on the woman probably fit well. I’ll cast no aspersions with respect to the other gents.

Hemorrhoids are flaring up again around here it seems. Lots of defensive, angry replies back to the OP.

I read the OP’s post as substance over style wins at the end of the day. When everyone has a hot model they aren’t really hot anymore.

Op it reminds me when I visit the floor where the junior investment bankers sit, everyone one of them has a Sub and rolled up sleeves every day. But the most senior guy on the floor wears a humble Milgauss

In MY experience, the majority (not all) of the people that notice Rolex are not what I would call "watch" people. I don't mean that in a negative way, but when we start to talk most of the time it is obvious they know the Rolex brand and little else (by else I'm not talking about how to make a watch, just some other common brands, trends etc).

In my experience when someone notices I'm wearing my Speedmaster, they are usually what I would call "watch" people and I've had some great conversations/friendships talking with these folks.

I saw a guy with a Randys Donut in one hand and a 5711 on the other. I could go on.

But what really looked sharp was a simple 34mm OP worn by a tastefully dressed young woman.

It was a wake up call for me. I can’t say for sure why those dudes bought their watches, but I admit I’m drawn to some watches because I’m hoping some cool will rub off on me. Some of us get so mixed up with the goal of getting a hot watch and one upping the next guy. It was obvious how the guy in Gearys let his new Smurf 41 hang off his wrist so we can all see.

But a well proportioned 34mm OP on a nicely dressed young woman blew away all those busters’ game.

I couldn't agree with you more. Many believe that the watch has to be a particular brand and a particular model but there are so many interesting pieces out there.

Thank you for bringing that up.

Although I try hard (honestly, I try, try, try) to be non-judgmental, I am continually unprepared for anything to which I have become unaccustomed--especially within specialist enclaves of interest to me (such as WIS, food, equity, climate, pollution, wildlife, plants, fossils, paintings, sculpture, cars, design, history, fiction...) in which I assume everyone has cast aside shibboleths (dang, I can't get that term out of my head ever since I read it in a Hodinkee article) to concentrate on the topic of mutual interest. Often, my own inability for self reflection and humility embarrasses and annoys me. I am grateful that gender bias was thoroughly wrung out of me by women students and colleagues who demonstrated how much bias there was (and remains) against them in college and profession. Being very dense, it took me over ten years to acknowledge that cruel bias as fact and practice. Unlike climate, enlightenment did not seep in slowly, but in a series of jolts that floored me.

In this instance, from the OP's own account, it seems that the woman who was observed "made the watch". Don't you think that "clothing makes the man" is as axiomatic as "a diamond is forever"--commercial mottos that have been absorbed by a society longing to conform and "succeed"? I recall the big fuss in a TZ forum the day of GHW Bush's inauguration. He wore a Patek. The forum was ecstatic, but everyone understood that even if it had been his only watch that it, his outfit, his car, his meal (no broccoli), etc., were not what defined or "made him". Who remembers what brand of watch Winston Churchill wore? We know that our watches do not define (make) us--and that is an essence of our shared WISdom.

PS: Because this is an enclave of WISs (or is it WISses) I expect to see on Breguet Forum: "Hah! Those folks on Rolex Forums don't even know Winston Churchill's watch!"
