I'd get this one (about as simple as it gets) or the one with a date function if you absolutely need it.

My choice would be a GMT. Mine I have had for 38 years and as I spent most of my life working internationally it has served me well. But it all depends on your personal lifestyle. A GMT may not be appropriate to you. if you have an active life perhaps a Sub or other sports watch. if an office worker than a DD or DJ.
The cast material, there again it depends on your lifestyle.

I'd choose a GMT Master II. I have both a 116710BLNR and 16710 (currently with a Pepsi bezel). If I could choose only one, it'd be the 16710 as I get 3 watches in one (even more if you consider the Jubilee). And I find the GMT complication very useful.
16710 is the way to go!

Sub date. Practical, simple, tough, quality, attractive, can’t miss...the date function is even more important during this pandemic which may be with us for years...

Without hesitation, my thought is the EXP2. The more watches I get, the more this one stands out, IMO.

Your pick on the dial color, I would probably go black.

If I had to go down to one it would by the Sea Dweller 50th anniversary. It can handle any situation

I've tried and failed many times to stick with one watch.

But gun to the head if it's consolidation and marriage for life, then Platona or 519LN.

If active lifestyle, then the classic sub (new slim lugs version)

Wouldn't a Yachtmaster do the trick? That's what it's designed for.

If I could only have one Rolex it would be a Sub Red 1680.

Failing that a Rose Gold Yachtmaster - I'd just have to get past worrying about scratching it.

If it is simplicity you want. Sub 114060/124060. A simple no bull sh*it watch that simply tells the time and does it well!

Thank you everyone for posting your thoughts on what you’d do if you had just have one Rolex. I have quite a few pieces from various brands and price ranges. Sticking with Rolex because of my grandfather. He had one and it was stolen after he passed away. It’s my way of keeping a connection with him. He was in the air- force and an very accomplished sailor. Thanks again to everyone taking the time to respond

How vague can you be. Everyone listed every Rolex on earth ever made, which you all know already since you are into watches. So what's the point without mentioning a budget?

It's either a 36mm Rolex or a 40mm one either on a jubilee or oyster (or president bracelet for a DD).

Well certainly didn’t need the reply if you wanted to be snarky. I said I was being vague because I wanted other people’s thoughts and experiences. Maybe I’m missing something as I consolidate my life to one piece. I enjoy and appreciate thoughts from enthusiasts from the community
