Potential 5513 purchase

Would like some advice from the assembly please

Never bought a vintage watch of any description let alone a Rolex. But I keep thinking about a Sub from the year I was born.

Have done my research and am liking the one below.
Serviced in 2021 and never worn since. Replacement strap but apparently hands, dial and bezel are all original. No boxes or papers but has Rolex service docs.

Watch looks in great condition for a 53 year old time piece. Is up at EUR18k.

The only thing that stops me from buying is - EUR18k for a 53 year old watch. Is this a fair price ??

18k for a meters-first 5513 isn't insane, although it's closer to gilt territory.

However, Chrono24 is a minefield. I'd do more research and work with a dealer you trust, rather than just diving in with some random seller.

There are plenty of 5513s out there. Take the time to make sure you get the right one (which you are obviously trying to do by the very fact you're here, but it's a long road).

What year sub are you looking for?

18k EUR for this one seems on the high side to me.

The crown guards look filed down, no papers...why the high price?

Thanks for this - never had an issue with Chrono24 to be honest but am out of my depth with the vintage stuff.

The pricing of Vintage seems to be all over the place. Some watches look more "loved" than others yet pricing is perhaps opportunistic ?

Agree - take my time and don't just buy the first piece I see.

Thanks again

For these older references you could fill a library with all the info you need to make an informed purchase. If it were me, Id stay away from c24 and look at dealers like tropicalwatch or hqmilton who specialize in these models.

I'd never buy a watch based on that one bad photo, although perhaps there were others in the listing (presumably all similarly bad with that common white-washed background that shows no real detail.)

Agree with the above .... be especially careful on Chrono24. They also have fees/taxes that aren't reflected in the listed price, so this Sub might actually be more than 18K Euros.

This is the constant refrain from vintage newcomers. When the prices make sense to you, you will be ready to buy.

Please post better pics: it's impossible to even discuss a watch this way.

Do your research they said

Don’t buy the first one you see they said

You will know when your ready - if you have to ask your not ready they said.

Walked past a vintage watch dealers associated with the Rolex dealer in Amsterdam today and saw a 1968 5513 in the window. First one I’ve seen in person.
Looked at it through a loupe for scratches, cracked markers, studied the text and dial.
Dealer said it had a replacement strap from the early 80’s, and the lume on the bottom of the hour hand had been “sympathetically” restored to match the rest of the lume.
Last serviced by Rolex in Sept 2021 so has 2 years Rolex guarantee and then 2 years from the dealer.

Talked price, made an offer and before you knew it I bought a vintage Rolex

What an amazing coincidence that it happened to be the same watch you were looking at on Chrono24 2 months ago. What are the odds!!!

Indeed. I had no idea that the authorised Rolex dealer in Amsterdam had a vintage side, but did not use their usual name online to avoid issues with the manufacturers.

And got EUR4k off from the price it was originally advertised for.

Never a truer word said...if there is a very wide range eg 79260/70/80 small blocks at moment...those who are/get clued up will know what's approx. correct!
