As a Tiling Contractor, I’d seriously investigate a Schlutter Kerdi system shower .... it’s the only shower I’d install for my customers as it’s 100% waterproof. Anything else and you will probably have issues down the road....

That’s what I did in my home.

Kerdi board for the walls. Ditra heat for the floors.

A friend of mine works in the remodel business, his father owns a fairly large contracting business and together we basically redid a bathroom in my apartment. To be noted; the building we live in was built about 150 years ago - I could move to the burbs and have bathrooms much larger than 50 square feet, but then I wouldn't be door to door in 25 minutes. I'd love to have a 300 square foot bathroom, but I don't want to spend 10-12 hours a week commuting. This bathroom prob hadn't been touched in 40 years.

Look at how thick this tile was, they had just gone over the previous tiles, prob from like the 1940's:

I'm sort of leaning toward doing the project in two steps, first floor, toilet and vanity, and second about maybe a year later the shower, unless there is good reason not to (which I will certainly yield to).

The shower will be as big a mess as the floor. I would do it now. Toilet and vanity are two hour projects that are easy once the hard surfaces are done.

started in on the bathroom remodel. This is the end of day two.

Good points:

-floor was better than I thought, 5/8" plywood on 1/2" plywood (actual)
-less water damage than imagined
-took out a 3 foot square area of the 5/8" and replaced it with 3/4" nominal which measured very close to 5/8"
-learning a lot, trying hard.

Bad:
-got yelled at for tracking thinset through the house, I think some of my ex's would have "liked" that I was working on the house but I guess there may be a reason why they are ex's
-tough being a bathroom down
-exploded a bag of thinset mortar on doorstep that I will probably be "talked" to about tmrw.
-Put a few holes in the wall
-ate a ton of food today

Neutral:
-May paint the walls. perhaps white (any suggestions?)
-taking a bit longer than anticipated but i figure if you do it right the first time it will save time in the long run
-Need to figure out what to do about baseboards -- thinking about cutting marble into 6" and setting it (any suggestions)
-I didn't realize I had to thinset the cement board onto the plywood
-putting off shower until another year/not leaking but also not big had the well pump go and the dishwasher (replaced with a kitchen aid)go this month, also bought a few new couches coming in a few weeks.
--so next year will be new kitchen counter, new shower and floors for the hall foyer and living room. If marble goes well I may consider putting marble there.

I wouldn't paint it white unless I wanted to feel like I was in a truck stop bathroom. Take the missus to Lowes and scan the color gallery. Find a nice neutral pastel that matches the fixtures. Make certain she loves it or you will be doing it again.

For your baseboard moulding, look into PVC. It comes in standard colonial base at Lowes. It cuts and installs just like wood, is bright white, and will be immune to the moisture and cleaners that are found in bathrooms (especially around the commode).

I completely agree, looks much better. When I started I planned on tearing out a wall and doing a new larger tile shower with frameless door. I had the well pump go out last month so while dude was down there I asked if shower was leaking. He said no, so I decided to put off the shower part for a year or two from now.

Planning on going through each room and updating it to be "ready to sell", and if we sell it great if not we enjoy it. So I think I'll put the shower after the living room and kitchen, unless it drives me nuts...

Good thoughts Abdullah. I went with a polyurethane. Waiting for the nail gun to come in, USPS is trying to deliver the package to who knows where, I got to call USPS/Amazon.

I'm thinking since it is a bathroom to caulk the bottom of the molding to the marble for even a bit more water resistance and to deal with slight changes in marble height.

Could you answer this question, since it was on my mind as well? I thought you would take out the tub first before putting everything in.

Use paintable construction caulk (not tub and tile caulk). I also caulk the joints in the corners. It makes the line go away, leaving a sharper looking corner. The caulk will flex with the moulding and keep the joints looking sharp for years.

I think the tub was refinished. Definitely an option when working in older homes. A new acrylic coating is sprayed on the tub. Looks new again.

Glass enclosure Always looks great..and as said, makes the room look larger, more open, overall.. Clear silicone around the metal trim/frame of the enclosure..inside especially...but all around for a good seal.

Good idea there.. if able. - Didn't notice or see mentioned .. I presume you have a bath exhaust fan arrangement at the ceiling..?!?
Tile used as a base is often used too.. grouted and sealed could do the trick too.. but maybe, too much tile could distract from the 'surround'. Base, caulked, filled and painted semi-gloss will stand up over time...

It has been awhile since I updated this thread.

Got the molding done. Finished the audio and smart monitor — I used a pair of 6” JBL ceiling speakers wired to a raspberry pi 3 with an X400 dac/amplifier on it and have shairsync (or a variant) running which enables about 30w per channel with airplay connectivity and audio control. The screen is an old 22” monitor I had laying around it runs a magic mirror system which displays my icloud pictures and syncs my events into the calander as well as providing news feed via rss.

. I updated the lights over the vanity to a newer style 4 bulb setup.

My parents gave me an extra bambo window treatment. finally i replaced the fan and added ducting (it wasn’t ducted before so the exhaust was just let into the attic). this job is now done.

The improvement from laminate over warped flooring to the marble is fantastic. the new toilet is very reliable. the audio system and smart montior really works well.

All in I guess it cost about $2k.

Wow.... some add ons there. Almost like you'd never have to leave the bathroom... Sounds awesome. Congrats
