How ironic would that be?

The auctioneers must LOVE it when they see these two at the same auction!

Tell me about it! I was with Kamal, one of the brothers, he bought about 4 watches, including comex, military, and PN! It was quite a day!

I find it very strange ....

I find it very strange that people are willing to pay that premium for a COMEX dialed Rolex.

What is the facination? I would never wear it unless I had worked for COMEX, and it's not like most of them did anything that special. They are basically construction workers that have a rather unusual work location.

Maybe if you had the one that Theo Mavrostomos wore during the COMEX Hydra 10 experimental Sat dive to a record depth of 701 meters it would be worth something.

But other than that why do any of you put this kind of value on these watches that someone you never knew wore to work every once in a while doing something you don't know about, in a working environment you don't know about, to a depth not known to you, etc.

What do you say when you show it to someone or if they ask about it? Oh, me no I don't even dive but maybe the guy who owned this went down and installed a spool piece in a pipeline or repaired the bag stop on a BOP or chased down a lost pig or slapped on a plidco clamp or perhaps you flanged up a line with your spud wrench (don't forget to mention the garlock). But since none of you know what any of this means then what do you say? Feel free to use any of these terms if you like while wearing your COMEX Rolex guys. This seems a lot like a guy who would pretend to be a soldier or sailor to me.

I think it has to be a guy thing, we like to wear hat, shirt and other thing that have names on them. I will buy the DeepSea because it is what it is (plus I love Rolex watches) will it ever be used for it's originally purpose I doubt it regardless I'll own one and I think it just the same with a Comex. We pay to own a Rolex for many many reason, for me I just love them .
cheers Berni

I am not talking about the Rolex part of it; I have two Rolexes and have owned three others and might even consider getting a DeepSea. I am talking about why would you pay $67,000 extra for the little COMEX print on the dial of a Seadweller that would otherwise cost maybe $5000 without COMEX on it.

Besides the fact that I would not wear it because I did not work for COMEX, when I was a Commercial Diver in the 1970's Comex was not the preferred employer in the industry for a variety of reasons.

The same could be said for a Super Bowl ring won/worn by Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, etc. Being a "fan" of the team and/or organization adds value to some buyers.

Well, there were only around 2,000 Comex watches ever made, and maybe half still exist.

The same reason why people will pay $$millions for a painting by Picasso, that looks like a 10 year old done!

Don't try to analyse the collectors market, it's all crazy.

There are about 3 different types of Comex watches that were made, i.e with slightly different markings on the case back etc.. and only about 400 or so were know to be made.

I agree premiums on the Comex and Military Subs are pretty insane. At yesterdays auction they were averaging... $130k and these were bought by dealers who will sell them on for $180k each!

I some one for sale which was amongst the 2004 batch of 14 delivered to Comex.

This watch (a 16610, F serial) was spanky new, unworn with all the paperwork and Comex certification.

It was offered for £75,000. It may seem like £73,000 for the Comex dial, caseback engraving and the paperwork but then you have to consider that a PN dial makes a 6239 £60,000 more desireable to the serious collectors.

What is for certain is there are people with bigger pockets and a better brain than I who pay the money for these watches so they have to be worth it, otherwise they would not sell.

This is a bubble, just like any other bubbles (tulips, dotcom), a sharp needle will pop it, and the sharp needle is sub-prime crisis, recession.
Just hold on tight and we'll see a flood of forced sales, fingers crossed.
When there's blood on the floor, start buying!

Hello and welcome

Your information regarding Comex is totally incorrect.

I think you need to go here:
www.doubleredseadweller.com

There were in fact NINE different models of Comex watches made and issued, AND the casebacks vary greatly. In fact, there are different styles of caseback engravings within the same model.
