Fear of gold?

In many posts there seems to be an aversion to gold. I'm not sure I understand. Rolex watches are expensive no matter what they are made of. They are flashy. Gold doesn't make them flashier. They stopped being "tools" a long time ago. No sense pretending it's not jewelry.

People who wear jewelry still have different tastes about what jewelry they want to wear.

Yellow gold has been out of style for some time now. My sense is that it's coming back, but it's no shock that plenty of people, especially men, aren't into it.

And style aside, the fact that gold is softer and more expensive is a pretty reasonable turn-off.

Yeah, except that (yellow/red) gold does clearly make a watch look flashier.

Most people would not recognise your watch as a Rolex unless they were close enough to read the dial. Most people recognise gold as gold pretty quickly.

They're still tools imo regardless of the metal they're made of and their polish or lack thereof. If they can perform the function, they are a tool regardless of what they look like. A Sub is still a dive watch, a GMT Master a GMT, and an Explorer 2 a GMT/Compass. The Daytona still a good timer, that you you can also, take diving with screw down pushers. The column wheel and vertical clutch help accuracy and durability with the chronograph.

Gold is pretty resilient metal. Will it show scratches easier of course, but has some other features such as increased corrosion resistance that are often overlooked

I don´t know how political correct this forum is, but please allow me to have some level of self mockery.

I´m born and raised in Amsterdam, but my roots lay in the Middle East. Looking at my own family (migrated in the 70s to US and EU), I can say times have definitely changed. There was a time (through 90´s) I saw nothing but gold or two tone watches in my family and friend group. During Christmas and NYE it looked like a Mercedes dealership at my granddad´s place.

Today? Nowhere to be seen. Even the women got rid of golden rings and went for white gold. I seriously have 6-9 weddings per year and haven´t seen golden rings on a wedding since 2007 or 2008. People want to show something nice, but they tend to stay subtile.

I have quite a few family members and friends with a Rolex, out of that selection there´s only one guy that wears a bit of gold (16613).

If I would borrow that 16613, visit my parrents and they spot that watch with those colors...they´ll hang me haha.

Since ancient times gold has been a symbol of wealth, status and royalty. An English gentlemen should be modest and discrete about wealth.

Not afraid of it, it's just ugly or dated in most configurations. I do like a little yellow gold teamed with a watch that has a lot of black on it (I actually like the look of the new Black Bay Chrono S&G, it's just too expensive and I think using faux plated gold is an affront to the customer for $6,000). I also like rose gold on some watches.

But most yellow gold and especially TT watches are hideously ugly.

A "gold watch" was a big status symbol in the 70s, 80s, 90s. Definitely an older generation thing.

I'd personally love to wear a gold Rolex but they're triple the cost unless you buy used. I really like the gold and rose gold GMTs but for ~$40k I'll pass. If they were $15k I might have bought one.

Same here. Though my wallet currently has a fear of PM, so I tend to stick with SS.

I do think yellow or rose gold looks great on some wrists, but certainly not mine.

i agree and i have been saying this forever.... scarcity is the status symbol of today.

People dont seem to get that, but the fact is getting a SS Rolex is more impressive than the fact its expensive. SS is the status symbol and its cheaper.

A SS daytona C will impress far more people than a RG one. Its not about "wow you are rich" its about "how did you get that". People want to show off the scarcity and difficulty not the cost.

it depends to who though. the general public won't even notice a SS daytona most of the time but they will notice gold. but yes, if you are around those who know you are absolutely correct

Many people don't like the color. It shouldn't be that difficult to understand.

I completely get your point. That said, a SS Rolex won't impress me. Neither will a Gold. Come with a double split chronograph and that impresses me

Though this probably says more about the nature of today's buyers than anything. Rather we have those that want a look at me/I'm special piece vs being appreciative of the mechanics.

That said you can get a SS Daytona or Sky D from Rolex in the current market by 1. Being Rich and willing to spend $100k plus on other watches or
2. Paying a premium that is huge, which is a whole other conversation

oh and one more way I guess.....buying $100k plus a year in Rolex watches even when you're not super wealthy, and then resell them all. Hmm this last one sounds familiar, sure seems like Rolex is in actuality promoting flippers and forcing a market for watches that are harder to sell

Well played Rolex. Checkmate and ready for your win.

Personally, I love gold watches and RG for sure.

I only see two problems, one of them is the price and another one is that they shine too much and the thieves know it.

If worn properly, NOT to exude being wealthy, flashy, etc.... I think anything goes these days. The right attitude/personality helps out as well..IMO
