And if he walks away with it, how would you prove the watch is yours, even that you didn’t just gift it or sell it to him? It’s a recipe for disaster.

So I am just wondering if a stranger (with a reasonable judgment that they're not gonna rob you) bump into you, ask about your Rolex, and ask to try it on, what would you do? Are you leaning to respond by "leave me alone" or pridefully showcase your precious ?
Absolutely not, I wouldn't let a stranger try on my G-Shock. My goodness...

Stranger? I guess it really depends on the situation. In most situations, no. At a face to face get together of WISs; probably. But really the question is if I mind them asking. No problem; I hope they don't mind me answering, "no!!!"

I'd have no problem with it, but they'd need to hand me their wallet and smartphone to hold first.

Is this for real? No way, I don’t even let my close friends try my Rolex on.

Never. I’ve let buddies who’ve asked try them on but they’re close friends and wanted to see what they felt like. A stranger? No chance in hell!

I never ever take my watch off unless a close friend asks (and they must be close).

The other time I let someone see it is when I was at my AD chatting and a wife came in looking for a SubC date for her husbands 50th. They didn’t have one in stock so I let her see mine.

If a rando asked me to try my watch on I would laugh and say sorry this doesn’t come off.

“I’m surprised you can walk boy, you must have balls yay big!”

I’d have to decline to a total stranger in a wide open space as the risk of them running off with it would just be too unknown. I think if someone was clearly genuine then maybe I would if sat at a table on a moving train or airplane or something.

Your best bet might be to tag along at a GTG (get together) that are occasionally organised. I’ve not been to one but I imagine swapping watches for a few moments occurs.

I didn't mind since it was at the ADs, at a Rolex event and there was security. So perhaps find a watch get together / meet up and hope to find one.

I second this. Find a watch meet-up near you, its worth it.

I don't even let my best friends touch my watches, if a stranger asked they'd get the 'The Rock' intense stare from me.

I can empathize with OPs point of view. In reasonable situations I will be willing.

I get it. Went into Lee Michales today, asked to see an explorer II polar (I'm a customer). If I liked it, I'd buy it, but was concerned about it "wearing big."

"We don't have one"

"Ok. Can you request one? I'll buy it if it wears well."

"A month ago, yes. Now we can't request one-off references. I can call you when one comes in..."

"I list...? For the Explorer II?"

"Definitely not a list. I'll call you as soon as we get the next one in, though."

Tough to try it on, but if they have to order it and I don't like it, they will move it no problem. I'll just have to wait a bit to try it on.

I guess I should be thankful I wasn't asked for a deposit.

...and no chance am I going to let someone I don't know take one of my watches. :)

A total stranger that just walked up to me out of the blue? Probably not. However, I've been in situations where young guys have complimented my watch and, if had asked, I would've let them try it on.
