Incoming for someone but not me!

Stopped by my new AD (new for me) and after we talked about all of today’s Rolex issues, he showed me a Skydweller that was waiting for its new owner to pick up. This guy is really cool and I think eventually we will do some business?! Anyway, Below is the watch he brought out for me to at least get to see…

From my perspective it’s nice to see they actually receive new watches occasionally. I was getting use to empty cases and SAs complaining about nothing new coming in…

Since it was someone else’s new watch, we were both very careful handling it, he did let me feel the heft of it and it is a very impressive watch in person. The SA who sold the watch came over and collected it to do some photography and so I asked for this photo. It’s amazing for all the talk about how many watches Rolex actually produces it was obvious we all treated this as something very special.

It use to be special to have $50k to blow on a watch. Now it’s special to have the opportunity to blow $50k on said watch lol... buying watches these days is a joke

I always wonder of the potential awkward situation that may happen and I am sure has happened of a customer being allowed to "handle" another customer's soon to be watch by the SA - OOPS it slips and crashes down to the nice tile floor - who picks up the bill?

Frankly, for this reason, even if offered, I would never touch a watch that was not intended to be mine. Who needs that responsibility - it's not a $20 item.

Additionally, If I were on the end of the actual buyer, I would honestly not be pleased that a stranger (aside from the sales associate) was touching my watch under any circumstances.

That is my grail, right there. Got to handle one at the end of last year and was mildly interested in buying. Could've had it for 45k out the door, but I thought that was too much money.

Oh yeah, and like a couple of weeks later they had both this one and the RG DD40 w/green dial in the case. Geez...

That's certainly one way to look at it. There's plenty of this sentiment floating around TRF these days.

However, to look at things in a different way, in the old days you would be doing exactly that, blowing 50k. On a watch that wouldn't be worth anywhere near that in the future, say you decided to sell or trade it.

While the current climate is considerably more frustrating and difficult to navigate, if you're lucky enough to come across a watch like this for 50k, then you're not blowing 50k, not at all. You're actually coming out ahead, i.e., owning a spectacular watch that's worth more than you paid for it.

It just depends on how you look at it.

I was lucky to see an example of this watch in person at an AD in 2019. Imho, the RG metal is an absolute perfect match for the rhodium dial. It's an all-around stunningly beautiful piece! The new owner is going to be very pleased.

I like the Oyster Flex on the Skydwellers better but love this dial. It’s still pretty darn cool.

how about ...

OOPS ... I accidentally put a scratch on the clasp
oh what a travesty
there's no way the intended client will want this watch now, will he?
i'm terribly sorry ...
let me make this right
i will buy the watch right now so you don't have to deal with presenting a terribly damaged watch to the original client

score a new skydweller at retail and skip the wait

Well, great question. I’ve been dropping by this AD for about 6 months and every time I’ve worn a different good watch. I was wearing my Speedmaster on this day and while we were talking, he mentioned mine looked new and I said it is 27 years old. They see I’m careful with my watches and to show me the heft he placed it on my fingers of my open palm while never actually letting go. Anyway, if something had happened, I would have bought as is on the spot lol. Probably would not do this if I was the SA but with age comes wisdom.

Certainly sounds like you care for your watches!

It's hard to argue the fact that accidents do happen to everyone and I can just imagine the look on the SA's face if that watch slipped.

I do like the "oops I scratched the clasp now I have to buy it approach"

I do agree with you, thought it was kind of crazy but my last SA at my former AD also put a new Sub on my arm just after they were introduced last Sept. She too didn't actually let go of it.

The rhodium dial I think is the best on the RG SkyD. I remember just two years ago these would languish in the display case! Now, you can’t find them anywhere.
