5712/1A - changing moon phase without the Patek tool

Just a quick question - I don't currently have access to my box as it is in storage, and therefore I don't have the tool that Patek provide to assist with adjusting the moon phase. I'm happy to play it safe and go to storage next week to pick the tool up, but is there any *safe* way to do this at home without the tool, and if so what do you recommend?

Most prefer a wooden toothpick regardless as it has less chance to scratch than the tool.

Toothpick or a pencil.

I have some mechanical pencils that the lead is the perfect size.

Are you able to retrieve your pusher? I always use pusher because I don't want to risk leaving tiny wood fragments from the toothpick into the correction rings. It is uncommon but I don't want to risk it.

I was told my my AD to only use the tool that was provided as I have white gold, and the tool is white gold, apparently white gold on white gold will bit scratch.

Just be very careful and take your time. I can tell you from experience that white gold can and will scratch white gold :(

I’d get a digital watch!

I use various implements all dependent where I am when I notice the moonphase is out.

Office: paperclip, drawing pin, staple or Montblanc fountain pen
Home: corkscrew, wifes hairpin
Restaurant: usually order a fillet and then use the pointy end of the steak knife

Agreed, can and does happen - trimming the end to remove the fine point lessons the chances of small shards breaking off in the pusher recess. Service centres will tell you all sorts of horror stories from pieces they have had to fix.

Safest way is just to wait for that month, date, day, and moon to come around again and then you don’t have to worry about scratches and shards…

If you don't want to use a DIY solution, Bergeon sell a replica of the Patek tool. It is a few pounds. I leave my Patek tool in the box, and use the Bergeon version.

Wooden toothpick works the best, I use it for my 5205. Actually more handy than Patek tool. I might misplace the stylus if I don't keep it safe in its box haha.

If you want to have an easier time of it than with a thin toothpick, try a bamboo skewer.

If you're really worried a plastic toothpick would work but I've used a wood one without problems. The tool is gold so softer than the case/pusher

I never use the stylus for any of my pieces...I always use a wood toothpick. It is softer than any of the watch metals hence less likely to scratch due to human error...which I am very capable of.
