Hi everyone,

Ive just opened my first stocks and shares ISA (from the UK), new to investing, from what I have looked at so far though it seems like glorified gambling, no one knows which way the stock will go!

Any advise for someone just beginning and tips on how you choose your portfolio, more than just reading the news and making speculative predictions?

Thanks

Don't buy individual stocks. Buy and index fund and forget about it.

Talking stocks, trading, and investing in general

Big Day for HRTX Tomorrow. Hopefully they get FDA Approval! We may see the stock pop but the big money will come if and when they sell to big pharma, IMHO.

If they are not sold quickly it may take HRTX a few quarters to get the drug out there and as it gains traction it will look more attractive to one or several of the big boys!

Good Luck if you are in HRTX!

Unfortunately we received bad news from the FDA today... https://finance.yahoo.com/news/heron...120000825.html

Heron Therapeutics drug is solid but the FDA has additional concerns regarding Chemistry Manufacturing and Controls (CMC) and Non-Clinical Information that need to be addressed.

The Bottom Line: NO Clinical Safety or Efficacy Issues Identified, and No Requirement for Further Clinical Data The Drug Works!

I'm Holding Here! Good Luck Everyone!

Anyone buying anything on discount today?

Waiting to see what else happens?

If buying, what are you thinking and why?

LOL, @G8RDPM wins "understatement of the year" award today.

I've been mostly short the market for a bit too long so I'll be getting ready to close out my position. It's still too high for me to be buying anything, although if one of my (few) holdings gets hammered, then I'll buy more of it.

Maybe a utility stock, if the price drops a bit.

Exactly that. I’ve been waiting for a day like this.

But with oil concerns, issues with trade, and the potential for martial conflict all over the world, I’m thinking it’s going to get way worse. So I’ll likely hold for a bit and see what happens.

I agree with you @superdog, that it's going to get way worse, but it seems that for now the market is just shrugging off the news. Down about 1% as I write this, which is nothing.

If you're not in HRTX I'd pick up some positions here at a great price.

I have a sustatial stash and I'm posied to buy when the market breaks. I did put several hundred thousand dollars to work a few weeks ago in emerging markets.

Best of Luck to Everyone!

For speculators, Larry (who is a long-time supporter of HRTX) is right, this is an opportunity.

Reading the news on this item, it appears that the FDA did not reject their drug based on any test results, but that they need more info. I quote:
The regulatory agency did not identify any clinical or safety issues with the drug, but wrote in a complete response letter that it was unable to approve the application due to a need for more non-clinical data and additional information on chemistry, manufacturing and controls.
So, one has to assume that the company will respond ASAP and thoroughly to the request. And based on historic market behavior, once the FDA approves it, the stock will pop.

I'm in. Wish me luck.

Short Uber, go long on Heron. When a stock is up this much on a really bad day for the market, I take that as a positive, bullish move.

Uber, sorry, it's a lousy business model, their drivers can (and have) strike at any time, the pay is terrible, and it's too expensive while losing, what, a billion dollars a year? That's nuts.

Yes, I added to my position on HRTX today. It's up over 8% (today) as of a few minutes ago.

Where is Larry? I want to give him a big kiss!

I think I’m going to wait now and see what tomorrow brings, if it drops back off a bit I’ll jump in.... properly this time, so annoying I’ve missed out on the 7.5% rise due to not confirming the order!!

I like buying things I understand... and holding them. My stuff gains 10 percent a year, after fees. And I’m fine with that. I do not at all believe in diversity investments. I don’t care for mutual funds except for a few vanguard funds... I believe you should be buying 4 or less stocks and hold them for many years, especially dividend payers. Amazon would be the exception. I try to buy stuff that will only go down if Armageddon occurs. Then it won’t matter. I also like ETFs like DTD or SPY.... they’re simple. “Buy it and hold,” I say. And if you average 10 percent growth, not counting dividends, you’re trading well. After fees. You’ve got to look at fees. Also, Roth IRAs are in my opinion amazing opportunities... I’ll never understand , beyond ETFs, why people have 100 stocks... I prefer to have 5 or less, and just them sit. And when the public decides to buy high, sell low, I try to sell high (if I have to even sell) or buy low. I also think the market is unpredictable, but if you buy something like visa, and visa goes to zero.... there are bigger issues than the market. Those are the stocks I’ve bought and held for many years. Amazon also years ago... when everyone told me amazon was high risk, overpriced, etc. and it is , was, and always will be overpriced, but I still bought a lot of,it many years ago. Another good etf is CDC from victory. The guy that runs that is a genius, mathematically.. also, never park your money in one place. I use Allan mecham as an exception.. I trust him. But I also take money out yearly from him and move it around.
