Why are you into Seiko?

I’m interested to hear why fellow TRF fans are into Seiko!

Personally I’m slowing growing my own Seiko collection and been focusing mainly on Seiko 5 which I think brings great value at its price point!

Starting to love the Seiko brand more and more…

Because their 1960s and 1970s watches led the world, yet have been largely forgotten. A King or Grand Seiko with immense historical significance can be had for a tiny fraction of their Swiss contemporaries, and they will run better (often still to COSC-standards), and look shockingly contemporary to boot.

This, plus they've been making the most interesting and attractive dive watches and chronographs for more than half a century. You could collect only Seiko for a lifetime and never get bored, or learn everything about them.

Because you can actually get them, they are as good if not better than the hyped Swiss watches (0f which I have had many, and I mean many) the owners are not snobs, they are reliable, fun, cool, attractive, you can beat the crap out of them, and they just get better, we don’t have to listen or read the owners’ posts about investments, small scratches, can you do (Fill in the blank) with your seiko, you can have one or several and they are affordable...or you can buy higher end pieces and still not listen to drivel from the owners, they come in a myriad of sizes, we don’t have to listen to the bs about “my SA” “my AD” you don’t have to buy other jewelry to get one, build a faux relationship with your alleged AD or SA, or be annoyed by those silly abbreviations, or whether it is Mark I or II or XXX... owners love them for what they are, they aren’t fodder for bragging, be put down by the cool kids cuz you complain that they aren’t available, and you can get new or vintage or used all for relatively reasonable prices, you don’t have to worry about condescending arrogance about the intricacies of your seiko from people who cut and paste or parrot the internet about movements, you don’t have to come up with fake posts about going places and worrying about your Seiko, or sadly, what you deem to be real posts about the same...huh...gee, I am sure that I have a few more ideas...but, damn it felt good to type this!! think I will wear my cool King Turtle or Flightmaster tomorrow!

1) Love the history specially their dive watches.
2) Some of their vintage designs are breathtakingly timeless and has a certain charm.
3) The collector community ain’t that bad either. Less rude and lots of people sharing knowledge; Actually reminds me a lot of the Rolex community pre-hype days.

That being said, it’s a rabbit hole once you jump in. I suggest to focus on what you really want and where you wanna take your collection coz it’s so easy to buy up everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) specially if you’re used to Rolex or other more expensive brands.

I for one have narrowed my Seiko collection to vintage Divers and a couple of modern Grand Seikos Good luck!

I like the appearance, wear and history of a lot of the watches. They are fun to own and typically I do not have a lot in them so I can own multiples. You can also buy/sell/trade very easily.

Lot of value for the price. The skx007 was unbeatable for the price. They ran pretty well, super durable, love that.

I wore a 2nd hand Seiko while at high school and university. My 'gateway' purchase was a new SRP777 Turtle reissue, just after they were first released. Have had the mechanical watch bug ever since. Still have them all, the Turtle is my beater/farm work watch.

Got one from my grandparents when I was like 13 or 14. A quartz diver Japanese edition 7548-7001 and even after 40 years no service, still keeps better time than my Superlative Chronometer Rolex. It's cool as F! BTW, almost purchased the SPB207 mini-marine master. That is a lovely watch and I may have to still purchase it! Fits like a glove! the 300M Marine Master was just a little too chunky and top heavy for my taste and wrist but still very nice!

When I was growing up, that’s what I saw. The seiko h558 was the seiko that got me into watches when l saw it in all the arnie movies. For me, I have always been broadly into watches and not simply a Rolex only collector.

My story with Seiko started one day when I a friend of my send over a vintage Seiko on Instagram DM. Was intrigued by the level of finish the watch seemed to have, being 60 years old and all. Then I started researching a bit more and decided to pull the trigger on my first vintage Seiko, which is this Seikomatic!

Remember being incredible impressed by the finish and the shine to the dial!

I mean, having dealt with vintage Rolexes for so long, the price point at 300 bucks felt like a bargain, can’t barely get a link to a vintage Rolex bracelet at that price nowadays ; )

That first Seiko buy pivoted me into the world of Seiko and it felt like when I first started with vintage Rolexes…with affordable prices and high quality for the price point!

I’m now up to over 20 Seikos, merely vintage and neo-vintage but also a couple of brand new pieces.

Really love the Seiko 5 line where you can get a brand new automatic watch with bracelet for 100-150 bucks. Insane!

And as it happens to 99.9% of the clocks made, it doesn't work :-)
