Breguet vs ALS

I am looking to add a dress watch to my collection, and I've narrowed it down to the following two pieces:

- ALS Saxonia Thin (in white gold)
- Breguet Classique 7147 Grand Feu Enamel (in white gold)

What are your thoughts?

I believe that both are more or less in the same price range actually.

Depends if you want a classic dress watch with a fairly minimal design or a much more quirky piece. Also manual vs automatic of course.

I'd go ALS but haven't pulled the trigger on the Saxonia Thin as my Calatrava doesn't get much wrist time anyway these days. No need for a second basic dress watch on my part hence.

I prefer the manual wind movement of ALS, but the enamel dial on that Breguet is a work of art.

I am leaning towards the Breguet because I was mesmerised by the enamel dial when I saw the watch in person.

I’ve seen both in the metal, and I’m a Breguet fanboy. Breguet all the way - you get the secret signature on the sapphire, automatic, and a much more interesting and beautiful dial, along with hand finished case. The movement won’t look as nice though.

Neither, get a Breguet Tradition. Was chatting with a major brand watchmaker two weekend's ago. While he worked for a big major different brand, his next will be the Breguet and I added it to my list. Horologically it makes sense for a deep collection. jmho

Agree.. the Breguet Tradition for me too

If that is not an option... still the Breguet
Probably the most underrated big brand out there

With their movements, history, DNA .... I don't understand why they aren't much more popular

They are both beautiful, but …

I think that iteration of the Breguet is a “hybrid” … it can be worn as dress watch, and can be worn as a casual watch, with those numerals.

The ALS is a classic Dress Watch.

If you are looking for a pure / strict Dress Watch … then the A. Lange

I had nearly the same debate, though different watches … the Breguet 5177 vs. the ALS 1815.

I liked different things in each.

The ALS fit me better, with their curved lugs.

I liked the formality of the Roman Numerals on the Breguet 5177 vs. the more casual Arabic Numerals of the ALS 1815.

In the end I bought the Breguet, because it was Yellow Gold vs. the Pink Gold ALS.

Good luck with your search … there are no wrong answers.

I personally would go with the ALS due to its more sleek modern look and the nicer movement.

But it sounds like you're captivated by the Breguet dial (understandably).

You'll look at the dial more than anything else.

Don't ever opt for a "better" watch (whatever that means) that you'll love less.

Prefer the breguet the Lange is too sterile for me. Agree with Steven I’d rather have a tradition or 1815 from Lange.

Between the two, I'll take the Breguet.

I used to own the Breguet 7147, it was a wonderful watch but wore more like a 42, it felt too big for a dress watch on the wrist. I sold it couple of years ago, don't have a dress watch now but if I was in the market for one I would go for the ALS.

The saxonia thin used to be a relative value play but this year it had a massive price hike.

I think the ALS looks better in pink gold while the Breguet enamel dial fits better for the white gold case. Looks like you want a watch in white gold so I would go with the Breguet.

Thank you for all your thoughtful comments. I need to try the Saxonia first before I make the decision, but definitely leaning towards Breguet more.

P.S. Not a fan of Breguet Tradition unfortunately.

I'm generally on team ALS, but in this case, the Breguet wins with that dial :)

Happy hunting!
